Bingu threatens Malawi opposition with arrest over leaked letters

image Mvula:I have never been privy and part of the correspondence machinery between the two Excellencies

Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has threatened to arrest opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders over leaked letters between the Head of State and his predecessor Bakili Muluzi.

In the correspondence now in public domain, the President accuses his predecessor of spreading many “lies” among other things that Mutharika is suffering from prostate cancer and in turn writes that he knows Muluzi is a sick man.

The former president pointed out in his reply that he has since being cured of disc problems which "came about because of the grueling campaign of 2004 that I had undertaken on Your Excellency’s behalf".

Mutharika through State House spokesman, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi said security forces are going to accuse the UDF-alliance spokesman Humphrey Mvula and the party leadership of being liable and responsible for the leaked documents.

Mtumodzi speaking on state radio, MBC said police will arrest Mvula on allegations that he leaked the documents which were first reported by the Weekend Nation newspaper and now posted on Nyasa Times website.

Mvula immediately dismissed State House threats and described the accusations as “frivolous, mischievous and a figment of imagination gone wild.”

“As Humphrey Mvula, I have never been privy and part of the correspondence machinery between the two Excellencies,” said Mvula.

“I am neither Dr. Muluzi’s personal assistant nor do I occupy a position that could allow me access Dr. Muluzi’s personal correspondence. Besides, I am not an employee of the Office of the Former President; I am an individual member of the United Democratic Front (UDF),” explained the UDF director of research who is also accused in the letter by President Mutharika for spreading lies.

“The State House Press Officer Mr. Chikumbutso Mtumodzi has always amazed me by his ability to namedrop and accuse persons for happenings or incidents that those accused have no knowledge about. I am personally amazed by Mr. Mtumodzi’s ability to create a mysterious and morbid persona around my name, even over happenings that I have no knowledge about,” pointed out Mvula.

UDF-alliance spokesman caims that he is fully aware that Mtumodzi has been personally responsible for five of the eleven arrests that he has suffered since 2004.

“Therefore I am not surprised that he would make such a threat today and I would not be shocked when such a threat is executed.

“However, I would challenge him to produce evidence that I am indeed responsible for the leakage of the said presidential correspondence, otherwise I reserve my right to sue Mr. Mtumodzi for character assassination; whatever the time it takes, one day justice will prevail,” said Mvula.

Billy Banda, executive director of Malawi Watch speaking on Day Break Malawi programme of Capital FM Radio called for “reconciliation” amongst the two leaders.

“The two leaders have not done fairness to our society. In the first place I think the letter from President to the former president has a lot to be desired and the tone itself has quite a number of issues that the society could not really like.,” said Banda.

He said the exchange of the letters is a sad development.

Magayi a Nyasa,

Nkhani iyi mwafotokoza kaletu. Are you quoting the same letters, etc with no news?

Where has Mutharika issued the warning for arrests in your article here? * does not go well each time you headline some so-called news which seeem so disjointed as you have done here.

Anyway, if Mvula has no case to answer why shld he worry? However some sanity is needed in all this. * do blame papers like Nation or Dailytimes for not bringing up their news online. They are more objective in their analysis and presentation. Nyasaguys, learn something from them asap.

Its not a matter of worry to Mvula here! The fact is where did Mtumodzi get the evidence that its Mvula who is behind the leakage.Through experience,we should suspect Mtumodzi to have leaked these letters with the intention to implicate Mvula. As Mvula puts it,Chikumbutso has been trying to endanger him since 2004.He is afraid that when UNITED DEMOCRATIC FRONT TAKES OVER THE GOVERNMENT NEXT YEAR HE WILL FIND NO PLACE STAY.And let me those DIRTY PEOPLES' PARTY FANS to begin now making up your minds.

You people who are writing about Mvula, you do not know Mvula well. Some of you can be on his payroll, even though you are in Britain, USA. Mvula is doing very well, therefore calling Mvula a miserable person, is not only laughable but also insane.

Coming to threats by Chikumbutso, if you want Mvula to be reaping where he did not sow, go ahead with the arrest, but mind you our tax money will be spent on compensating him after failing to prosecute him as you do not have evidence. Investigate thoroughly and you will find the source of the leakage. You have heard him, he is telling you facts that lead him not to have been the source of the leakage. Mvulatu adazolowera kudya ndalama zoterozo, zomangomupatsa za ziiii, chifukwa cha zitsiru ngati Mtumodziyo. * partially agree with Mr Kawoko that Mr Mvula is used to getting money on silver platter. remember the millions he got from Shire Bus Lines? though it is well known that he was swindling money from the company, the govt side was seen to be persecuting him. the govt should not rush to harrass him. on the other side, this giy is a gangsta like Al Capone, he is a notorious mafia and can kill you if you stand on his way. pliz a DPP, if you arrest this man, tell the Malawi Police Force [not service] to break his neck, the steve Biko way. arrest this heartless man. he is behind the leakages

Hands Kawoko, * must extol your remarks on Mtumodzi’* behaviour. This big headed boy thinks he is greater than Malawi. During UDF time, * used to work in Blantyre at a certain private company. This guy feels knows everything, * know him personally; he used to jostle in Bt city with **** *******. * even don’* know what made Bingu to employ such caliber in that respectable office. There are so many well mannered men, women, girls and boys who can work in that post of state press office too competently (1 million times the way this bugger does). Gentlemen you mean Malawi should re-embrace those excruciating decades of crocodiles and police and MYP state, just because one has aired out his or her opinion. Surely * will be coming back to Malawi and * will campaign for a president who can bring unity and genuine democracy to Malawians, osati zoopsezana izi. Every time police, police, police, treason, treason, treason, what for? Police is there to protect its citizens, after all Bingu is just human being like me; he is also prone to erratic judgments, mungandiuze munthu amene salakwa? Iyeyo ndi yesu ndani? Ngati bingu walakwitsa tiyenera kumuuza, not you should be threatening people with arrest. Do you think even the letter he wrote Muluzi as his mentor and predecessor is professional and commendable? Sitingasekelere zopusazo iyayi, we need to respect each other. If indeed Bingu had concrete evidence or just evidence that Muluzi is funding some media house to character-assassinate him maliciously, he would have called him face a` face, not writing him that letter ngati ukuuza mwana wang’ono. * have always said * don’* buy Muluzi’* recent politics but the way you Mtumbodzis are doing leaves a lot to desired, you may you have support, but people are watching you, come 2009 you will cry. Even here some people are wondering, why should Bingu the so called academician and world professional economist could sink so low to employ Tumodzi to antagonize Malwians. Surely this precedent you putting will reflect badly when you will out of government. * pray Muluzi should win for this guy is too human, sangakumangeni ngati a Tembo. Sachedwa kumva chisoni. Koma mind you, beware of Mvula, he has been subjected to different tortures, * hope he will emulate Muluzi’* forgiving altitude. Otherwise * can predict ……….

How do you know how much money Mvula has at the bank that can enable him pay all these people? You must have a connection with Mvula to know all these things. That explains why your comments are always yellowish and without substance, umakhala utanyambita za Mvula.

The guy had no meaningful investments when at Shire he was happy as chief executive forgetting that 1 day he will be kicked out.Ndi mbale wanga ameneyu and even when he was in power he never assisted any of his relatives poor as they are in mzimba. And now ask any relation of this Mvula m'mene akutuwira pano and how happy they are with this.Get correct information about this guy.

FUNSO NDI LAKUTI, WHERE DID YOU GET THE LETTER DESTINED TO MULUZI AND WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION TO PUBLISH IT?
BINGU SHOULD FIRST ORDER AN ARREST OF MULUZI HIMSELF TO EXPLAIN CAUSE THAT LETTER WAS CLEARLY MARKED "STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL". THEN AFTER THAT, GOVEERNEMNT SHOULD ARREST THE OWNERS OF NYASA TIMES. ITS EASY TO FIND THEM JUST LIASE WITH FBI OR CIA AND GET INFORMATION FROM THE ISP WHERE THIS WEBSITE IS HOSTED IN USA. PUT THEM ON THE LIST OF FUGITIVES WANTED BY THE MALAWI GOVERNMENTS AND INTERPOL WILL GREATLÖY DO THEIR JOB.
MWANYANYA, YOUR REPORTING IS TURNISHING THE IMAGE OF MALAWI.

* think the problem in Malawi is we have lots of useless people who follow these presidents blindly without considering the consequences of their actions.
Honestly, why does one Mtumodzi want to cause havoc in our country? Is it necessary?
You see, civic education appears to be required even at state house.
Its really a shame that we have characters like him who seem not to know the role they are supposed to play as a press officer.

Besides that, they should have expected that the letter might be leaked and * wonder if it was really necessary for the President to write such a letter.
* wonder whta these guys are putting our president to, they are a shame - advisors etcetera.
You see, Malawians are exposed now and never think we can just accept nonsense. My foot, they need a life.

We are simply watching but remember that a time will come when He will not be in power and tidzakuonani mutafuwa.

* think Muluzi gave the letter to Nyasatimes team himself because he was told that he will be arrested so he wanted the people to know why he gona be arrested if it really happens.
