Malawi’s Joy FM radio closed
Joy FM, the private radio station at the centre of a political wrangle with the state has been ordered to close down “with immediate effect” by Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Nyasa Times has learnt.
The order signed by MACRA director general Allexion Chiwaya comes hours after the High Court lifted a court injunction obtained by Joy FM last month stopping the communications regulator from closing down the radio for allegedly being owned by politicians.
Joy FM lawyer Ralph Kasambara is set to appeal to the Supreme Court against Judge Joseph Manyungwa's judgement, where he is expected to contest that the substantive issues have not been infringed upon.
Manyungwa said in his ruling that Joy FM had failed to disclose all material facts relating to the case when the station applied for the injunction against the earlier closure.
Joy FM is owned by UDF Presidential Candidate Dr. Bakili Muluzi, his wife, Patricia Shanil, and Atupele Properties Limited.
President Bingu wa Mutharika recently wrote Muluzi an angry letter in which he warned of imminent arrest for what he said was Muluzi's campaign to discredit him in the international community.

All we need the media committe of parliament to look at what they can to make TVM and MBC opposition friendly. Andale asakhalenso ndi radio station. Sitikufuna Rwanda kuno.
My fellow Malawian, is this worth celebrating ?
Lets weigh up facts first leading to this fiasco.
On Kasambara, are you not ashamed to see these unending politically motivated arrests whereby the state end up paying millions in compensation.
Is the state in the business of making instant millionaires?
Please, save Malawi from these shameful acts.
Pple we always wrongly advise these former heads of states and this is what made Kamuzu Wamuyaya.
Tell these old guys their good side, to help them retire than cheating them oh bwana we can,* win without you, UDF will die if you retire,,,, this is what makes them believe these lies in the process you destroy them.
Just imagine Muluzi has backche problem and he will be forced to campaign again kuti adyeranu muzadyerere but he will be in pains at his bed room, please think of his health also he needs more rest physically, mentally and emotionally.
Amalawi tinatani kodi?
* wish Muluzi shd rest and relax at Ntaja with his family and leave the stage to younger generations.
Reporters need to report responsibly.
Have you been at school at all? How do you earn your living? Your names can tell something too.
It has been coming. We know even with the injunction in the Court of Appeal the end is so nigh for Joy Radio and TV. By the way how daft is Muluzi and advisers not to have read the law about Media ownership and being politicians? HIding behind some Co name was probably a smart idea. May be Muluzi wanted the glory of being the owner?
The type of material being broadcast on Joy has been abhorrent. Its so poisonous and instigatory. This is why someone said we do not want another Rwanda here, bcoz, by the same token every politician can abuse the airwaves if they had a chance to do so. Imagine the anarchy!
Mzara.
