Bingu orders advisors to step down

image Mutharika: Dressed down Ntaba

President Ngwazi Bingu wa Mutharika has ordered four of his special advisors who are gunning for parliamentary seats in their respective constituencies to immediately step down so that they can contest in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) primaries this month.

Senior political advisor Francis Mphepo, advisor on national unity Nicholas Dausi and advisor on religious affairs Malani Mtonga recently participated in controversial and disputed primaries against deputy information minister John Bande, minister of labour Davis Katsonga, and deputy gender minister Papano Mwafulirwa in Mwanza Central, Blantyre City East and Karonga South constituencies, respectively.

Primaries in these constituencies were called off to iron out disputes of alleged rigging by ministers in Karonga South and Mwanza Central and by Mphepo in Blantyre City East.

But in a new twist to the controversy, State House sources in Lilongwe have revealed President Mutharika, well-known as a maverick, summoned the advisors, including Chief political advisor Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba, a day before he left for the UN aid summit in Doha, Qatar and declared that he would not allow them to participate in the primary re-run before they resigned as advisors.

Apparently, according to the sources, Mutharika favours the cabinet ministers.

“Yes, there is a government directive that all aspiring MPs who are civil servants have to resign from public service to pursue the political ambitions, but this is an isolated case as the advisors are more of politicians than civil servants.

“The president fears that a continued tussle between the concerned advisors and cabinet ministers would jeopardize DPP’s chances of winning next year,” the sources said.

Meanwhile, at that meeting President Mutharika is reported to have reprimanded Ntaba for what he said was his underperformance in his DPP duties, accusing him of abdicating his role in the party to concentrate on his personal ambitions to reclaim Lilongwe South-east.

“The President was angry with Ntaba. It seems he fell short of telling him that that’s why he was removed as DPP Secretary General. The President actually declared Ntaba would not win in his constituency,” government insiders said.

DPP Secretary General Henry Chimunthu Banda said Mutharika is the head of the party and could therefore summon any member of the party on any issue.

He, however, refused to be drawn into this matter, saying he is not aware of such a meeting.

Mr Ntaba and MYP Dausi mwayiwona game? Kutengeka ndi madzeradzera. The best you can do is to leave the party and contest as independent. Dont be satisfied with appointment positions, any time you can be kicked out and be the end of your political career. If you contests as independent and win Bingu will not have powers over you because you will belong to the electorate. This is Bingu COMESA guy, graduated in India and bribed MZUNI lectures. Well done Mose. *, for one, felt very sorry for Davis Katsonga who suddenly seem to be in trouble at the hands of Dausi. This needn'* be the case. Katsonga is a senior minister in the current administration and would have been expected to sail through being troubled.

Very tricky Mr President, if they resign means they gonna lose advisory jobs. If they lose primaries they are out of DPP and should start from zero level to gain their weights. Cha!a!a no where to run, give them time to discuss with their families. Only persons with plan B can resign. Ine ayi.

Bingu is right. There is conflict of interest for these advisors to also compete in the primaries. At the end of the day, they fail to perform their advisory role, being too busy campaigning

Ngwazi. That is the way any ngwazi is likely to get business done. Is anyone learning any lesson yet? More is coming. Do not wait until you see. Run and hide!!! May be in farming...the rainy season is just starting. Time for depending on someone to climb the height is long gone...it went with Bingu and Atcheya. Everyone must now construct his/ladder ladder and climb his weight on it.

The appointments of Nicholas Dausi and Francis Mpepho were based on the understanding that they were causing problems in the consitituencies of thier origin. In order to defuse tension, they were rewarded with advisory role. However, they are far below standards to advise the dictator. Thus why they are still pursuing pariamentary posts. As for Ntaba, he has failed to understand his roles as Minister, Advisor, Physician, SG and has always felt like the spokesperson. The primaries and lack of Convention in the DPP party will end the political career of those who are less clevar.
