Mutharika Apologizes to Livingstonia Synod

President Bingu Wa Mutharika has apologized to Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) over remarks made by his Chief Political Advisor Heatherwick Ntaba, who described the Synod as "spiritually bankrupt".

Government has since withdrawn the remarks unreservedly saying the Synod whose core base is the DPP stronghold is the last to be irked.

The Synod's Programme Manager for the Church and Society Programme, Moses Mkandawire told the media that the country's political impasse was as a result of the President's reluctance to deal with the controversial Section 65. And in his reaction, Ntaba who is also the DPP Secretary General said the remark by the Synod was an indication of "spiritual bankruptcy".

Meeting the Synod's hierarchy on Thursday, Presidential Advisor on Religious Affairs, Rev. Malan Mtonga said President Mutharika was equally aggrieved over the remarks.

"The President relies on Livingstonia Synod for Spiritual guidance. He therefore sent me to deliver his apologies to the Synod over the remarks made by Dr. Ntaba. We regret the hurt that you have gone through as a result of these remarks. We therefore withdraw the statement," said Mtonga, to the Synod's General Secretary, Rev. Matiya Nkhoma.

Mtonga pleaded with the Church to bury the hatchet and continue working with the government of President Mutharika.

"And the President wants to promote dialogue at all levels of the society. We have to keep on meeting whenever we have differences. We should not be sorting out our differences through the media," said Mtonga.

Mtonga said it was the wish of government to work closely with the Church in meting the holistic needs of the people. In his words, the Synod boss said he was overwhelmed by what he described as "humility" of the President to apologize to the Synod over the remarks.

"We are very much humbled by the gesture of the President to this effect. We have accepted his apology and we look forward to continue our close working relationship with government in its endeavours to develop the country," Nkhoma, told Nyasa Times.

Apparently out of pressure, when the Church and Society Programme made its statement the Synod disassociated itself from the statement and said it was not the stand of the Church, but personal stand of the programme's director.

Meanwhile, President Mutharika will attend the dedication ceremony of new Bandawe CCAP Church building in Nkata-Bay on Sunday.

Livingstonia Synod has thrown its weight behind President Mutharika and has for a long time now been pressurizing the President to pick on Finance Minister Goodal Gondwe as his running mate during the May 2009 polls.

It seems our president is now become serious looking at his actions. First he called for a meeting with the opposition and now he has apologised on behalf of his flunkey 'Computer', who thinks Malawians enjoy his hate comments. MBC and TVM stop being used that every time has something to say the whole newsroom is shaken.
That is coming Mr President we love people like Ntaba are the ones who will architect your down fall dont torelate such utterance. You are my man BINGU!!!

Dr Wa Muthalika will regret what some of the failed politicians will do to him. Do not underrate people like Moses Mkandawire who interact with the grassroots and influence a big swing in votes in the Livingstonia Synod. Let Munthalika not be cheated by the high profile "politibureau" of the church. The guys who work the magic are people like Moses. Mind you, northerners will not be taken for a ride again affter Kamuzu and Bakili!!!

* know Ntaba he has and will be a failure in everything. He wanted to destroy MCP, thereafter went to form his own party which did not last long and could not see days. He joined UDF after disbanding his solo party and there he also caused alot of problems and he was an eyesore, now here he is in DPP. * don'* know if he feels shame when he climbs this branch next that branch for the sake of masuku. Ichi chakoma ichi chakoma pusi bwana Ntaba adagwa chagada. Bwana Bingu, * have been writing on the failures of Ntaba and that you have not to be serious of him. Mind you. Joyce Banda HOn. to leave the position of Secretary General of DPP was because of the same Ntaba. Uladi Mussa to be sidelined by you, you know it is because of the same Ntaba. Now see that he stepped on the landmine. What would have happened if you did not apologise? North was going to be lost. Already there is tension that these people need Gondwe to be your runningmate, therefore play cards well. All the best bwana President.

Bwana president, you really are a statesman, komabe, there is one step that you ought to have taken. Ntaba was both on the radio and on the tv ( as usual), so you need to use the same medium, and it is going to be far much better if it was HETHER HIMSELF, AND MAKE SURE this should be his last time he doubles as the sg and the publicist. Let Nic do the publisty. All the best Mose wa Lero. Ntab ali ndi political virus that affects a lot of people and in the end may even destroy the whole party
