29 Malawians win US visa lottery

Twenty nine Malawians have won a right to live or migrate to the United States of America under the Diversity Visa Lottery 2009 results released by the Kentucky Consular Center in Williamsburg.

The winners are those who participated in the program in 2007 that attracted 9.1 million entries have since been registered and notified according to the terms of section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act annual permanent resident visas governing the program.

The Visa Lottery grants 50,000 permanent resident visas annually to randomly selected persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States and in 2009 approximately 99,600 applicants have been registered and notified to make an application for an immigrant visa.

The applicants, during the visa interview must provide proof of a high school education or its equivalent, or show two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience within the past five years.

The Kentucky body says that those selected need to act on their immigrant visa applications quickly.

“Applicants should follow the instructions in their notification letter and must fully complete the information requested.

“Registrants living legally in the United States who wish to apply for adjustment of their status must contact the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services for information on the requirements and procedures,” reads the media release.

Winners and their spouses or children have been warned  that they need receive visas by September 30, 2009 otherwise will derive no further benefit from their DV-2009 registration.

The upcoming DV-2010 lottery application dates will be released in August 2009 for migration in the year 2011 and forms will be available at the American embassy in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe.
