Ailing Justice Richard Banda back to work in January
Malawi’s former Chief Justice, Richard Banda, who suffered stroke about three months ago while attending a judiciary workshop in UK, is recovering well and is expected back to Swaziland where he is on contract as Chief Judge on January 18.
Justice Banda is the husband to Malawi’s Vice President, Joyce Banda and is recuperating in London.
According to The Swazi Observer newspaper, Registrar of the Swaziland Supreme Court Lorraine Hlophe dispelled “rumours” to the effect that Banda might not be returning to Swaziland due to ill-health and the fact that he has to be closer to his wife.
“What we know is that Justice Richard Banda is still the Chief Justice in [Swaziland]. I have been calling his wife in Malawi and she’s telling me he is recovering well,” said Hlophe, who is Controlling Officer in the judiciary.
“We are expecting him back on January 18, 2010 when the High Court re-opens. I’m not aware that he is departing.”
The registrar said the last time she saw Banda in UK, he was on his road to recovery and was talking and walking.
“He even accompanied me to the car and we were talking. We are confident that by next month, he would be fully recovered.”
