Bingu Foundation donates items to Thyolo people
About 170 elderly people from Nchilamwera and Kapichi villages in Thyolo district are all smiles after receiving a blanket each from President Bingu wa Mutharika’s foundation, the Silver Gray.
Apart from the blankets, the recipients also went home with plastic plates and cups, bowls and sweaters.
The Foundation, launched by the president some three years ago, is currently donating various items worth over K4 million to some 35 parliamentary constituencies across the country.
So far the Shire Highlands region of Chiradzulu, Mulanje, Phalombe and Thyolo (Mutharika’s home) has been the main benefactor.
According to information from the Foundation, only 10 constituencies from the Central and Northern Regions will benefit from the programme while 15 will come from the Southern Regions.
Silver Gray Foundation Executive Director, Frances Mkandawire said the institution donated the blankets to the elderly in order to help them survive the existing cold weather.
She said the elderly people needed to receive necessary care because they are custodians of the country’s culture and history.
“It is the president’s desire to help the elderly people in the country and the foundation is basically fulfilling that,” said Mkandawire, who could not say how much was spent on the donated items.
Member of Parliament for the area Kingsley Namakhwa who is also Deputy Minister of Information and Civic
Education thanked the foundation for the donation.
