Central Region Police Spokesperson John Namalenga said three women died on the spot on Monday along the Lilongwe-Kasungu road while two others- a Catholic Priest and a parish secretary- died at hospital after they were also involved in a car accident along the Lilongwe-Mchinji road.

According to Namalenga, the priest was identified as Father Gerald Loti, 33, of Chief Zulu in Mchinji and the parish secretary was Maltida Mtambalika, 28, of Kameza village in Chief Lundu in Blantyre.

The two were driving in a Nissan half-tone registration number BP 8093 which was hit at the rear by another vehicle at Mikayeli Turn-off in Mchinji. The accident occurred at about 8 o’clock in the evening.

Both the Priest and the parish secretary were pronounced dead on arrival at Mchinji District Hospital due to multiple injuries in the head sustained during the clash.

Father Loti, who was until his death Parish Priest for Maula Parish, was laid to rest on Monday afternoon at Likuni Cemetery. He was ordained to Priesthood on July 22, 2006. He also served Guilleme and Mtengowanthenga Parishes respectively during his pastoral work.

In another accident, Namalenga said three women traveling in an Isuzu vehicle died after a vehicle they were traveling in was involved in a head-on collision along the Lilongwe-Kasungu road. Three others were rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

“The accident happened around 10.00am on Monday. Their vehicle was being driven by Gracian Chisale, 38, while the other one was being driven by Wezi Kalua, 34, who was coming from South Africa,” said Namalenga.

The police PRO said the three women were Ruth Chisale, Mary Sozapanja and Grace Chimphambana but did not have their full details.
