China grants Malawi US$17.8m for road, parliament projects
The People’s Republic of China has granted Malawi over MK2.5 billion (US$17.8million) as additional funding for the construction of the northern Karonga-Chitipa road and a new parliament building in the capital Lilongwe.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Chinese ambassador Lin Songtian said the funding would enable the two projects to proceed according to schedule.
“Our government is committed to assist our friend Malawi to achieve its goals of poverty reduction through infrastructural development,” he said.
He said the construction of the remaining 88 km Karonga-Chitipa road was due to start and would be completed in 2011, while construction of the imposing parliament building was making progress and would be finished in 2010.
Deputy Minister of Finance Fraser Nihorya said the additional funding would speed up the work being undertaken at the two projects.
“With this funding the two projects will be completed in time and our government will fully own them very soon,” he said.–APA

Amathokoza zithu zikatha. Kumbukirani atcheya anachita kunena kuti ndalama za mseu wa Chitipa azipeza ndipo samagona tulo ndimseu umenewu, koma chinachitika ndichani? And now with equitty(quota) access, it is doubtful as the Presidenmt already said the north only produces 20% of the country’s resources hence they should not benefit much.
Did not know that there are even Deputy Ministers from the mulhakho area. Too bad for Malawi. Akadzabwela wina from the Lower States, he or she will also bring in people from the Sena region. Where is continuity here? We can not develop like this!
looking forward to the completion of the karonga-chitipa road come 2011, no excuses.I cannot wait to see that road.
pansana pake bingu angamange nseu umenewu?zabodza basi,im fed up of this prejudice
The whole china giving us only 17.8million and yet with our poor economy we can give Zimbabwe a 100million. shows that its possible to construct the road on our own, with our own money but we love Zimbabwe more than our roads. 17.8 million is making the headlines and yet the 100million went out without a single line in the papers. if it were not for the crisis, it would have remained a secret. shame.
The government never lent the amount of 100m to Zim.do not make nonsense here!!
Mwanyanya mwano mmalo mothokoza a hinya inu. Who told you that atumbuka okha ndi omwe angakhale nduna kapena achiwiri, eeeeeiiiisssshhhh!!!! Your comment is trash. Bingu is not above God. Can can do anything even bringing chivomerezi kwanuko or where Bingu is residing. Malawians will shower praises where they are due and they will not compromise should that someone play fools. Bingu has achievements on his side but he he also has weaknesses. We will continue to be critical of him where he has goofed so that he becomes perfect tomorrow. Though this is a hard feat to achieve in African leaders but at least the message would have reached him. When criticising Bingu, we would not be doing that because we are not of his tribe no but because he is our leader who needs to serve us with equity and loyalty,,,,,,,,,
Too much concrete jungle coming to world of all beings, maybe rats will start having concrete holes.
