chinaThe People’s Republic of China has granted Malawi over MK2.5 billion (US$17.8million) as additional funding for the construction of the northern Karonga-Chitipa road and a new parliament building in the capital Lilongwe.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Chinese ambassador Lin Songtian said the funding would enable the two projects to proceed according to schedule.

“Our government is committed to assist our friend Malawi to achieve its goals of poverty reduction through infrastructural development,” he said.

He said the construction of the remaining 88 km Karonga-Chitipa road was due to start and would be completed in 2011, while construction of the imposing parliament building was making progress and would be finished in 2010.

Deputy Minister of Finance Fraser Nihorya said the additional funding would speed up the work being undertaken at the two projects.

“With this funding the two projects will be completed in time and our government will fully own them very soon,” he said.–APA
