Cyclist Kaiya arrested for robbery

One of Malawi’s known cyclist, JonathaKaiya was recently apprehended by police for allegedly robbing a Lilongwe based woman.jona kaiya

Kaiya, 25 year is a on of Rev Fletcher Kaiya who is general secretary of the Baptist Convention of Malawi and is one of the respected faith leaders in Malawi.

He is reported to have given picked in his car, Jane Midian in the early hours of August 25 at Area 18 bus stage when the woman was going to work.

“Yes it is true that he robbed me but I can’t say much because the case is in court and investigations are underway,” Midian said in a telephone interview.

During the first court hearing, state prosecutor said Kaiya had threatened Midian and in the process snatched her handbag which had a mobile phone and its speakers, an ATM cash card, driver’s license and money.

Kaiyi who was arrested on 31 August is to answer charges of robbery and intimidation.

He was on remand at Maula prison when the court failed to hear the case due to inadequate time on 2nd September. 

 According to sources, Jonathan Kaiya was at the time of arrest driving members of his father’s congregation who are in the country to sink boreholes in several parts of the country.

It is believed that Kaiya used the church vehicle in committing the crime.

Kaiya is currently on bail.
