EU petitioned to suspend aid to Malawi over bankrolling Mugabe

bingu-wamutharika-300x204Malawi has been highlighted in a petition to the EU calling for punitive action against SADC countries over Zimbabwe affairs.

The Zimbabwe Vigil presented the petition to the EU’s Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Karel De Gucht in Brussels this week.

The petition reads: “A Petition to European Union Governments: We record our dismay at the failure of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to help the desperate people of Zimbabwe at their time of trial.

“We urge the UK government and the European Union in general to suspend government to government aid to all 14 SADC countries until they abide by their joint commitment to uphold human rights in the region. We suggest that the money should instead be used to feed the starving in Zimbabwe”.

The petition was handed over by Geoffrey Van Orden, MEP for the East of England, who received it at a ceremony last month to mark the Vigil’s seventh anniversary.

“Our argument is that SADC countries have been derelict in their duty to Zimbabwe.  Why should countries which support Mugabe’s tyranny receive money from EU taxpayers?

“Why, for instance, should Malawi get £70 million in balance of payments support this year from the UK alone when its people face starvation because of a reckless loan to Mugabe, which predictably has not been repaid? “ reads the petition.

SADC has ordered urgent talks in Zimbabwe to resolve differences over the Global Political Agreement. But Mugabe has shown what he thinks of this by flying off to Rome with a retinue of 60 locusts to tell the UN World Food Summit how badly Zimbabwe has been treated.

The loan Malawi government gave Zimbabwe has also be blamed to have bee n one  major cause of fore shortage in Malawi, the country which is currently experiencing fuel shortage, power blackout on daily basis and water scarcity.

Poverty is rooted out not by keeping for ourselves, but generously giving to those in need. Who knows why Malawi is being blessed in so many ways? Maybe its because we are helping feed Zimbabwe. By the way there are over 3 million Zimbabweans of Malawian origin in Zimbabwe. The same draught that has affected other parts of southern Africa has spared Malawi and we have had bumber harvests and surplus for the past five years. We even qualified for the ACN in Angola next year just to count a few of our blessings. Bravo Malawi keep giving and helping those in need.

  3. Sibweni Weni Weni says:

As a Malawian I see nothing wrong in giving food aid to Zimbabwe. Educate me if I’m ignorant but I assume that’s what they are talking about. On the other hand I’m not sure who it is better to support, the tyrant or the anarchist.

Tilekeni abale, tili ndi mabvuto athu a quota palikapano!

  4. Wezzie - Durban says:

Afrika stand up and stop your leaders achieving powerb at the expense of peace. We cant claim support to our leaders when we cant tell them that this is not what we wanted. These Vampires are capable of change only that they are too drunk of absolute power. Ian Khama is an Afrikan leader and he has shown us that its possible to rule with intergrity….

“If” and only “if” that is the case, that is the way they can help them both. A good Chess. Reginal influence is more powerful, but our leaders are like day dreaming.

yeah, ofcourse you give a devil a chance to govern your country, you give the devil all the power to run you down and support another devil and vampire at you expense, ladies and gentleman, where is our fuel going that we have to run our feeling stations dry, we are not ready to go Zimbabwe root,we are sick and tired of carrying time bombs everytime we have to cross zimbabwe let alone in our country, do they understand how much tourcher we go through with stinking fuel in our cars to avoid being stuck? do they understand the consiquences of carrying high infamable substances in your cars because you have no choice or any other alternative solution to get yourself to your destination safely while sitting with a risky time bomb. Come on man i think life is a valuable gift from God and leaders should learn to respect lives.Do you understand the number of people that are suffering in Zimbabwe simply because of our negligent members of parliament allowing our head of state to cover mugabes back side, starvation poverty etc, let us despise all the members of parliament that have nothing in mind besides inde bwana to fill their berries with our tax monies, its time we show these inconsiderate bunch of cheats that we are no longer sticking to their nonsense.Good people you have to rise, we did it with Kamuzu and we can do it with his imitator kangwazi kamlakho……..

  9. Pwitika says:

I knew long before that African leaders with the exception of Mandela and the new Khama are all the same- careless tyrannical bastards. How can a debt-ridden country like Malawi loan money to some tyrant? can someone school me plse?

  10. Chisyene Mesi says:

Was it a loan to Mugabe or a loan to Zimbabwe? Those who wrote the petition ‘Have No Heart’,dey are pure Babylon.
In African culture, and on humanitarian grounds, whenever parents are punishing one of the children in the family 4 whatever reason by withholding his food ration, usually another of the children reserves part of their own ration secretly 4 de one being reprimanded.
It is not about Bingu and Mugabe coz dese old folks will go at one time or another,it is about Malawi and Zimbabwe coz dese will go on.
