Germany has doubled its aid to Malawi from 30 million euro to 64 million euro for the next two years following a bilateral development cooperation agreement signed here.

Head of German Development in Southern Africa Ingolf Detriech said that his country decided to increase its aid to Malawi in recognition of the country’s discipline in fiscal management for the past few years.

“Malawi has made tremendous strides in improving its economic, food production and democratic governance compared to other countries, and this has made our government to place more trust in the government,” he said.

He added that there was progress made in poverty levels which has been reduced from 52 percent to 40 percent currently.

Secretary (Director General) to the Treasury, Joseph Mwanamvekha (pictured), said the aid had come at the right time to enable government to implement some of its programmes in the economy, food security and democracy.

“Part of the two-year aid from Germany will be used to provide relief to the forex shortage which our country is currently experiencing,” he said.–APAjoseph_mwanamvekha_751739384
