Have your say: The proposed new Malawi national flag

2vxfwwpMalawi government has released a proposed new national flag (pictured) to replace the current features.

Government spokesman, Reckford Thotho said authorities proposed to change the national flag replacing the rising sun with a full sun and change some colours “symbolising the development that has taken place.”.

Said the Information Minister: “The essence of changing the national flag is that times have changed since 1964 when Malawi adopted the flag on attaining its independence.

“The symbol of the rising sun that time made a lot of sense because it was dawn for freedom and hope. But there has been a lot of development that has taken place since and we cannot still be at dawn.”

However, a Blantyre based lawyer, who is also executive director of Justice Link Justin Dzonzi, has appealed to government of Bingu wa Mutharika to “simply resists the temptation” to change the features of the national flag.

“I think it’s a national issue and basically as a national issue it must have a national support for the change. The changes must be that the nation needs the change,” said Dzonzi.

“It’s not just a matter of preference for one individual. I don’t think the colours of our national flag have been subject of debate,” he pointed out.

The legal expert said any changes of features on the national flag should be based on solid and acceptable reasons.

“The rationale behind any change must be such change that is significant to Malawi,” he said.

What is your take on the new proposed flag? Should Malawi change the national flag? Should the proposed flag replace the existing flag? Post your comments below.

Bad idea, some things have historical significance, leave them alone(dont change the past that has meaning just like, was the case with changes to historical monuments that wer inherited by this administration), focus on issues of real meaning to the man in the village. Like you have done over the past several years. Britain’s flag has remained the same for centuaries. Good examples.

We don’t need that initiative, we appreciate your heart of renovating the old things, look around build us new dams, bridges, roads, if you have enough money build us skyscrappers in Lilongwe, mzuzu, Blantyre and Zomba. Gosh what an ugly proposed flag for my beloved country. Pliz we are proud of the flag don’t tamper with it

This is total chaos. Let us focus on other meaningful developments. The rising sun has nothing to do with development issues. Munabwera ndi moto a Bingu, pano mwatani? Nzeru zatha. A Thotho, it is better you bring something tangible not this issue. Mbendera yathu ndi yokongola ndipo yamatanthawuzo. Zisiyeni choncho please.

The move to change the national flag is a very welcome one, for several reasons amongst: the current flag is associated with the MCP regime which is full of blood, torture, opression and so many other inhumane’. these brutalites are still vivid in peoples minds when they cast a glance at the national flag.
Change is the only thing that is permanent if the change is for the better. I hope the change will bring in some fresh memories in peoples minds hence forging ahead thank you.

I still hold son reservation. I keep asking myself why do these people want to change the flag? and also why change the arrangement of colours……why having red on top and not at the bottom (blood ku north)? why having a full sun while we are not even half regarding all aspects of development. Bingu wants to get favours from outside(fact). He has to prove to us all his claims first before changing anything. There are problems that need to be addressed and fighting for a change to our national flag is not an issue.
