I have raised K25 million for safe motherhood in Malawi – Joyce Banda
Malawi Vice President, Joyce Banda has managed to raise K25 million from the private sector to help in safe motherhood so that the country remains on track to achieving one of the UN Millennium Development Goals of reducing maternal mortality.
The deputy president who is also goodwill ambassador of safe motherhood disclosed this at a fundraising dinner organized by charity White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood.
“I engaged in social mobilization campaign and within five months I raised 25 million Kwacha,” said the Vice President.
“The Money will specifically be used to support capacity of some needy health Centers with medical equipment and electrification,” said the Vice President.
Banda said Malawi has made good strides in the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
Malawi’s maternal mortality rate is currently at 807 per 100,000 births.
The Veep said : ”Malawi has made good strides in improving maternal health as the figures have gone down from 1120 deaths per 100,000 live births in 200.,”
She however pointed out that; “We need to bring this figure down to acceptable levels if we are to meet the MDG goals. It is our hope with all the efforts we are making we should be able to reduce this figure further.”
Dr. Joy Lawn, a newborn health expert with Save the Children, who recently travelled to Malawi to examine how the country is making progress in saving newborn lives noted that the country is on track to meet the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goal of reducing deaths of children under 5 years of age by 2/3 by 2015 despite a myriad of obstacles.
Most women in Malawi, around 60 percent, give birth at hospitals rather than at home, which allows them to receive the proper care they and their babies need.
“The government is building more health centers which are well equipped. We have also scaled up the training of midwives,” Professor Moses Charambo, Malawi Minister of Health is on record to have said.

Langizo langa kwa Mai Callista ndi lakuti musamvere amene akuti mulande nchito zimene a Veep ayambako kale. Kuchita chomwecho sikungamange umodzi ndipo zingawonenge character yanu. We have a lot of women related challenges ranging from girl participation in education to economic empowerment.
JB, zikomo kuti mwathandiza kusaka chuma choyendesela nchito za ubeleki wabwino. Pitirizani muzina la Ambuye
This is pure campaign. It is common knowledge that this woman is power hungry. Bingu is not my favourite but Joyce ndiye si material yolamulira. She tried to impose a candidate on her constituency after she became VP, but the people said No!!! Apparently she wasnt amused and called them names!!!!!Watch out Bingu.
Kodi ndifunse??????? Vice President ndi First Lady ndizimodzi. This is a mistake a lot of people are making by comparing the two. Mayi akunyumba kwa President ndi Vice President ndi zosiyana. Kodi akanakhala kuti VP ndiwamamuna bwezi rubbish ikulembedwayi iripo? Kodi bwanji kufuna kuyambisa mabodza. One thing for sure is that the job was given to the VP by someone, so that person is the one you should be criticising here or asking him or her to tell the VP to handover to the job or whatever to the First Lady.
WE DONT AND YOU MALAWIANS YOU DONT HAVE A FRIST LADY YET. WHEN YOU WILL HAVE ONE THEN THE PRESIDENT WILL GIVE A JOB TO THE FIRST LADY. DO YOU KNOW THAT FIRST LADY IS A WIFE, NOT A POLITICIAN? CALISTA HAVE QUALIFICATIONS SHE CAN USE WHEN SHE BECOMES FIRST LADY. LEAVE BOTH WOMEN ALONE. WHY DO YOU MALAWIANS DONT GIVE RESPECT TO WOMEN WHO ARE DOING GOOD THINGS. WHY DID YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT BANDA DID GO AND TRY TO GET MONEY FROM DONORS OR ANY INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION AND SEE IF IT IS EASY. JEALOUS AMALAWI. JEALOUS IS WHAT MAKES US POOR.
It is pleasing and colourful to the media to register a MK25 million fund raised. However looking back to analyse how much was spent in raising this, my fellow Malawi citizens, you’ll be shocked. More has been spent. From the campaigns it was estimated K3 million as expenditure per show, according what was spoken by one of sinior officers in the organising committee of her campaigns. Simple mathematics, how many hospital were visited? Do we think K25 Million is something to rejoice. Lets not be cheated. Give us all required statistics. Safe Motherhood comes second objective of these campaigns. Tidzaima 2014 is the main issue.
Gwalagwala, how do you cost the expected change in maternal care practices that may result from these “costly” safemother hood promotions? I think we should also look at these long term behaviour change benefits when analyzing the costs.
Ah, ah!…… Mai Nampeya mwato enjeza!
Mutofuna anthu tiyambe ku ulula kuti che Joyce anazunza amuna awo oyamba Bambo Kachale ndi nkhani za azibambo? Mutofuna tinene amene anaononga banja la Mai Mary Nkosi ndi Bambo Dan Nkosi? Mutofuna tinene m’mene Board Chair wa Admarc anapezekera akukhala ku Nyambadwe State Lodge nthawi ya Tcheya?
Chonde chepetsani mwano kuti mupewe kumuyalutsa mzanuyo.
You must hate her so much to say these things. What has she done to you. It must be personal.
Angokhala onse. Mayi VP ndi Mayi First Lady. Tiwone wolimba ndani. Mmene ndikuwonera ine, onsewa maudindo opatsidwa ndi Bingu. VP appointed by Bingu, First Lady appointed by Bingu. Onse okondedwa ndi Bingu. Tisalowelele.
You people are getting mixed up, Raising Malawi and Hunger Project are different, the First Lady has never worked for Raising Malawi it is Hunger Project it is the VPs relative who works for Raising Malawi.
Ignorance again…..VP et President are jointly elected….Bingu cannot fire Joyce…..we the voters hired them…mbuzi zopand nzeru zidakalipo pa Malawi pano……ngati anamusnkha ndi Bingu tamuuzeni Binguyo amuchotse pompano. If he does call me on my number…0999999934555555
i hope this money will be used for a good cause and not go into your pockets well done thats what we like to hear
Reading btwn the lines, one can tell that Jane Nampeya is someone close to Joyce Banda. And to have her say that ” tizamumanga Bingu” is most disheartening, to say the least. When will African democracy come of age? It seems all we dream abt is ”vengeance”. But vengeance for what? For making Joyce a Veep? The same applies to Bingu. Is he being honest to himself by treating Bakili the way he is doing? God bless Africa.
