IG commends Britain for Malawi Police reform programme

MukhithoInspector General of Malawi Police Service, Peter Mukhitho has commended the British Government for funding the reform programme, pointing out that it has contributed positively to the change of police from a “force” to a “service”

“The Malawi Police Service including Malawi government has benefitted more from the British aid, in fact the problem with Malawi society they always look for negatives but they don’t look for positives,” Police Chief said.

Mukhito the British sponsored reform programme has seen the introduction of Victim Support Unit and Community Policing.

He rated the positive contributing of the reform at 65 percent.

“I thank the British government and whosoever would want to invest in Malawi Police Service should do so,” said Mukhito on Capital Radio.

However, the Police chief admitted that the law enforcers were involved in malpractices and bad conduct denting the image of the service.

“Police offices have been found with criminals, committing rape, conniving with robbers. But we are trying to clean Malawi Police Service,” said Mukhito on Straight Talk monitored by Nyasa Times on Tuesday.

Commenting on the use of live bullets by cops in crowd control, Mukhito said officers are supposed to use minimal force but excessive force is at the discretion of the officers on patrol depending on the crowd reaction.

Mukhito also pointed out that the new policing services Dial 99ois complimenting the Dial 997 service.

He said under 990 initiative, the country’s cities have been demarcated into “manageable zone” where police vehicles are deployed to patrol and respond to urgent security needs.

“The 990[City Police Patrol] is complementing the work of 997. The services are right away at the doorsteps,” said Mukhito, former presidential guard commander who has been police chief for six months.

    Nothing like negatives but that’s what usually happens with our underpaid police.The police has been always involved in filthy deals and using guns from stations robbing innocent people for their hard earned thing and you say malawians are negative about their police.
    We pay taxes and we need these disgruntled policemen/women to conduct themselves in a very professional manner.What criteria do you do when recruiting these shameful policemen?They should also stop using Police cars for their drinking sprees.Those cars are supposed for security purpose in Malawi than kuyendera this aids infested hookers.
