India’s VP visiting Malawi in January

INDIA/The Vice-President of India, Hamid Ansari is expected to visit Malawi in the first week of January 2010 and a number of agreements will be inked during the visit.

The visit to Malawi comes at a significant time when President Bingu wa Mutharika will take over as chairman of the 53-member African Union in January.

Ansari is expected to start off from India on January 5 and will visit also visit Zambia and Botswana.

The Indian vice president’s tour is aimed at bringing to the fore India’s multi-faceted ties with Africa that focuses on triple Ts — trade, technology transfer and training.

The visit by India’s number two leader to Zambia and two other countries appears to be India’s wish not to be outdone by China in trading with Africa.

Several agreements are expected to be signed during Vice-President Hamid Ansari’s three-nation visit to Africa Jan 5-12, officials said.
