tvmA  senior government official has said jobs were at risk at the state national broadcaster MBC and  TVM as the radio and television stations  are expected to merge in January.

The merger would immediately impact on jobs at the state media houses, Nyasa Times learnt.

Offcials from Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Television Malawi were non-commital on the development and could not shed light on the  tie-up.

The government formed a task force last year to work out a merger of the national radio and the television station.

According to the recomendations, the new organisation born out of the merger will adopt the name MBC and will be re-registered as a public broadcaster with Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority.

“We  expect  employment losses  at the start of the new year as the merger takes place,” said a senior official at Ministry of Information.

The official said maintained that there will be a “number of job losses”, although he  declined to give further details and opted to have his name withheld.

MBC staffers also  told Nyasa Times that they have got wind of the news of  redundancies to his the radio.

I welcome the merge 100% and it was supposed to be so at the inception of tv. I would suggest that radios 1n2 shud have proper names ie Kabula Fm and Radio Chiweta where by 1 of them must b strictly English, the other 1 Chichewa plus news in other languages. possible a third radio to broadcast in Tumbuka

  2. Benson Nyamazi says:

I suggest that the new name after the merger should be called “Multimedia Complex” and not MBC.

    TVM at the Multimedia Complex.

    MBC at the Multimedia Complex

Provincial stations should remain as they were called e.g MBC – Mzuzu Studios. MBC – Lilongwe Studios.

Wish you all well. I hope not many lose their jobs, its just hard to find jobs out there. May be its a blessing to some if you can utilise your skills in the private sector, may be start your own radio?!, Consultancy firms, etc. Its never going to be easy for some. However, one with such skills must find ways to survive.

Does this promise us efficiency at all? Hope so. PLease lets have more objective works from our presenters and producers. Politics uko. Good luck all. May God bless Malawi.
