DSC_0104The Vice President, Joyce Banda, did not attend the wedding of President Bingu wa Mutharika’s daughter, Duwa, at Sanjika Palace amidst growing speculation that the relationship with her boss has soured.

Mutharika’s last daughter was marrying for the second time. She divorced Malawian businessman Maxon Kafoteka last year and tied the knot with Zimbabwean gym instructor Tonderai Mandaza Mubaria, Saturday.

The office of the Vice President did not give any explanation regarding the absence of Banda.

The Vice President has however been reported to be in the northern region visiting earthquake victims in Karonga, donating relief items during the week.

However, the Vice President did not attend the wedding despite being invited by her boss to come.

There are reports that President Mutharika is grooming his brother, Prof Peter Mutharika, the Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister, to succeed him when his own mandate expires in May 2014.

The Vice President is reported to eye the top job herself and is mobilising support within the rank and file of DPP.

The development is widening the rift between President Mutharika and the VP.

At the wedding, Prof Mutharika spoke on behalf of the Mutharika family, saying among other things, “I ask you to keep your wedding vows made before God and the community earlier on today.”
