Deputy Commissioner of Prison, Tobia Nowa wants the use of CCTV in jails

A 45 year old man accused of serial murder, rape and robbery is being kept on remand under tight security at Domasi prison in Zomba, Nyasa Times can reveal.

According to police records the suspect Robert Mugabe was arrested last year and is yet to appear before the court of law.

He was picked in connection with a succession of murders and rape incidents in communities surrounding Zomba, Phalombe, Mulanje and Chiradzulu districts.

His arrest is said to have attracted a pocket of celebrations among communities in Jali, Zomba district where the suspect hails from.

Mugabe whose name resembles that of the Zimbabwean tyrant leader has been operating under various characters and according to the police it had become difficult for him to be traced and busted.

“It’s true last year we arrested a man believed to be a dangerous thug and his name is Robert Mugabe. We have been looking for him for so many years and he is being suspected to have been behind several killings and aggravated burglary,” said a police officer who was part of the team that nabbed the suspect but did not want to be mentioned.

Deputy Malawi Prisons Chief Tobias Nowa asked for more to time to check with authorities at Domasi prison and promised to come back to this reporter, however, he did not honour his promise.

But speaking in confidence a warden at the prison where Mugabe is being kept confirmed to Nyasa Times about the development.

He also added that the suspect is being kept under a watchful eye as “we fear he might break out one day if we don’t keep him under maximum security because he is a dangerous criminal.”

Asked on why the suspected hard-core criminal is not being kept at the Zomba maximum prison, the warden said Domasi prison officer-in-charge communicated to the office of commissioner chief and his deputy on several occasions about transferring the suspect but said “up to now nothing has been done.”

“Domasi prison has very small capacity to keep under custody a person of Mugabe’s calibre, he is capable of doing anything but we’re trying to give him as much attention as possible. However, we would have been relieved if he was taken to Zomba prison.”

Nowa   is on record in the media proposing the use CCTV cameras in jails to monitor movements of inmates.
