Malawi Healthcare Support (MAHECAS UK), the UK based charity has presented a donation of MK246, 601.00 (equivalent to £1,000.00) to the National Disaster Appeal Fund for the Karonga earthquake victims.

The cheque in the said amount was handed over at a ceremony held in Lilongwe, by Dr Charles Mwansambo, the charity’s representative in Malawi and was received by the Commissioner, Mrs. Lillian Ng’oma.

Four people were killed and 30,000 saw their homes destroyed or damaged by the twin shocks that hit one of the world’s poorest countries in December.

Harry Mabaso, executive secretary of Maheca UK said the members of the charity were deeply saddened by the plight of the men, women and children of Karonga District and expresses their sympathy for the victims and their relatives.

“In light of this disaster Malawi Healthcare Support (UK) decided to make a contribution towards the effort everyone else is making in trying to bring the lives of the victims to normality, and hopes that the donation, together with the contributions of other donors and the Malawi Government’s efforts will help alleviate the suffering of the victims,” said Mabaso.

Malawi Health Care Support UK, (MAHECAS UK), was formed in February 1995 and became a UK registered charity in September 1996. The sole purpose of MAHECAS UK is to raise money to assist hospitals and medical services in Malawi.

The Charity’s objects (“the objects”) are to relieve sickness and preserve good health among Hospitals, Health Clinics, Surgeries and other places where Primary Health care is dispensed in Malawi (hereinafter called the “area of benefit”) by the provision of medical and other equipment and of medical expertise, training and personnel

The Voluntary Executive Committee works directly with nurses and doctors in Malawi in identifying needed equipment for their hospitals or Health Centres.

The charity has volunteers who monitor and co-ordinate the charity’s work in Malawi. They also ensure that equipment sent is used by the recipient hospitals according to the terms and conditions of the charity.

Meanwhile, Mabaso announced that Mahecas annual general meeting will be held on Saturday 6th of March 2010 in London from 14.00 at Shern Hall Methodist Church, Shernhall Street,  Walthamstow,  London E17 9HX.
