Malawi claims on fuels shortage are ‘lies’ –Mozambique
Mozambican port managers have denied claims by Malawi that the current shortage of fuel in that country is due to congestion in the Mozambican ports of Nacala and Beira.
Two managers of Beira and Nacala ports, Carlos Mesquita and Fernando Couto, described the claims as “lies”, when interviewed by Radio Mozambique on Monday.
Anyone with the slightest knowledge of the port of Nacala is well aware that its main problem is not congestion, but the exact opposite – chronic under-use. Nacala is regarded as the best deep water port on the east African coast. It does not need to be dredged and ships of any size can dock there.
It could certainly take tankers carrying fuel to Malawi – if the Malawians could pay for it. And this seems to be the real problem.
Fernando Couto, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Development Corridor (CDN), which runs the Nacala port and rail system, told the radio that the real cause of Malawi’s fuel problems is that Malawi is short of foreign currency.
“The Malawians have even asked us to lend them fuel”, Couto revealed. He stressed that tankers are always granted priority in docking. Certainly, CDN has no interest in sabotaging the supply of fuel to Malawi – for when there is no fuel flowing from Nacala to Malawi, CDN does not receive the port and rail fees for that cargo.
Mesquita, the CEO of Cornelder Mozambique, the consortium which runs the port of Beira, also categorically denied the Malawian claims.
Although there are limitations on the size of ship that can dock at Beira, the port is not congested. “There must be some other motive”, said Mesquita.

This Old man is realy sinking in deep waters. With all that tough talk against tobbaco buyers, how come we now hear that the country doesnt have enough foreign currency. I thought the old man assured us that his Chinese friends will bring the much needed foreign currency? What has happened? We Chinese are all over the country doing God knows what. Sometimes I wonder if our country needs friends like the chinese! They are really bringing our country down – contrary to what they pledged to do
Ndugu, your comentary stinks here.

So the fuel shortage issue was also discussed at “mzuzu corner” mr.pulezidenti.
i wish to advice all those who take part in this program that it is not gud to associate te issue of fuel shortage to that of QS & the nothernas plse they hv nothing to do with it, plse comeout and proov that they sabotage fuel to fautthe president thus very very very wrong.
Mose was busy listening to Mzuzu corner lies when fuel situation was getting bad. That is why the cornerned authorities are busy cheating him about the cause of diesel crisis. Kenako ayamba kunama kuti NACHIPANTI anamwa diesel yense
Zamveka kale kuti Bingu is mounting a blame on NACHIPANTI because he has sipped all the fuel.
may be it is high time that the president should start cogitating about such issues as fuel shortages, suspended road projects other than ‘pouring’ all the focus on quota system and milhako ya alomwe

The basis of fuel shortage is foreign currency and the shortage os foreign currency is no other than the call for devaluation of the Kwacha. You may recall that the president insists that he will never ever authorise the devaluation of the Kwacha since its main cause is yet not known. I feel this could now be taken as one of the cause. For us to buy more dollars (foreign currency) we need to have a Kwacha with real market value. Otherwise, it seems we offer less for the dollar as the seller is ready to accept. Therefore, the price of Kwacha to dollar need to be justified hence devaluation is now needed. Should we keep on being sturbon on this one, the stituation is likely to go worse than this, possibly Zimbabwe could be example.
While I support my prosident in most of developmental issues like Nsanje port, Kayerekera, etc. and not supporting QS but I would now like to kindly ask my beloved president to consider devaluation of our Kwacha so that we get more dollars foreign currency for the better running of our beloved counrty -MALAWI. VIVA BINGU and VIVA MALAWI.
Achimayi, Bingu demoted Goodall and fired Victor Mbewe for advising him to devalue the kwacha. Some doubtful economic minds supported Bingu, Am not an economistist but I read economics and I saw the folly of treating symptoms rather than the root cause.
Bingu has been making populist noises without economic reason and now is barking the quota system as a rabid dog to hide his mistakes.
He closed Finance Bank, closed the forex bureaus but forex is nowhere to be found.
