Malawi ex-president undergoes successful surgery in London

Malawi former president Bakili Muluzi Friday underwent “successful surgery” on his spine disc problem and is recovering at the London Clinic.

Shanil Muluzi, wife to the former president said when telephoned that Muluzi went under the knife at the London Clinic on Friday afternoon.

Muluzi, President of Malawi in 1994 to 2004, underwent a four-hour surgery which was perfobmmed by top consultant in UK, Farhad Afshar — BSc (Hons) MBBS (Hons) MRCS LRCP MD FRCS. The Neurosurgeon is also a specialist in lumbar spine disorders and lumbar spine disc surgery.

He led a team of three other top surgeons and five support staff.

“The doctors said the operation was successful. They have advised (Muluzi) to remain in hospital for recovery,” said the former first lady who arrived in UK days before the operation.

 Muluzi’s wife said the former president is resting but admitted he was in pain.

She said thousands of get-well messages poured in from around the world before the surgery and thanked all who prayed for Muluzi.

“We are grateful for the many prayers and messages of goodwill we have received,” said Mrs. Muluzi.

“We are thanking all Malawians who have been praying. We are also grateful to Presidents of different countries and retired presidents who have been sending goodwill messages. May God bless them all,” said the former first lady.

Muluzi’s children who are studying in the UK were also at the clinic with a group of Malawians who gathered at hospital to hold a vigil.

The former first lady said Malawians have been “so extraordinary” in praying for Muluzi.
