Malawi issues appeal for Karonga earthquake victims

karonga_cracksMalawi government has launched an appeal to provide emergency assistance to thousands of victims of the earthquake that shook northern region border district of Karonga.

Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs in the Office of President and Cabinet, Lillian Ng’oma said in a media statement: “The assistance will help alleviate the suffering amongst the affected people.”

The statement says that among many other items, the assistance required include maize flour, matemba/kapenta fish, beans, iodised kitchen salt, Likuni phala, cooking oil, milk, sugar, corn soya blend, tents for shelter and to be used as classrooms.

Other relief items needed are blankets, plastic sheets, plastic plates, plastic cups, spoons, matches, firewood, candles, jericans and building materials.

Government says donations should be channeled through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Private Bag 336, Lilongwe 3 or directly to the District Commissioner for Karonga.

Those paying through a bank cheque should pay the “National Disaster Appeal Fund”.

A one-year-old child died following a series of earthquakes (pictured) experienced the first week of December and several people were reported injured. Most of the mud-and-thatch houses built along the epicenter of the earthquake crumbled hundreds homeless.

“A camp has been established for the displaced people. The earth quakes have also damaged institutional infrastructure such as school blocks, teachers’ houses, police houses, health centers and boreholes,” said government in the statement.

Vice President Joyce Banda was the first to console the victims in Karonga and followed by President Bingu wa Mutharika.
