Malawi police is govt tool of ‘mass destruction’ says pressure group

Malawi’s political pressure group, Forum for New Direction (Fond) has condemned President Bingu wa Mutharika’s government for using of the police to infringe on people’s freedoms to engage in peaceful demonstrations.

Fond was reacting to the police conduct in Mzuzu city recently for barring the clergy of the Livingstonia Synod in their attempt to present a petition to the City Executive Officer on issues bordering: education and quota system in secondary schools, colleges and universities; issues on the rule of law; the flouting of the constitution on local election issues and increasing intolerance of other communities instigated by highest political leaderships.

The pressure group’s spokesman, Msenga Mulungu said Malawi Police is not a “Service” that government touts it to be, but rather still a government tool of “Mass Destruction, a Force”.

“Therefore, the obstruction of the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia to demonstrate against the issues deemed of national interest and nation building was unconstitutional.

“The clergy have a right to express disaffection with policies that are discriminatory in nature. FOND commends the CCAP’s Livingstonia Synod initiative in speaking out on behalf of the people on diverse issues that have come out into the public domain. It has become a voice of reason in the same manner as the prophetic action of the Chilembwes and others.”

Fond says the role of the church on issues political is “proverbial and only those that have an evil agenda have the audacity to derail this effort by the synod”.

The group reiterate that any functional official opposition in the country is now the Malawian people, who “through established democratic avenues of media and civil society must be vigilant and stand up against the violation of trust bestowed on our leaders”.

Mulungu said citizens must continue to agitate and demand “true democracy” to take roots.

The pressure group said its position on quota system policy is that while the President Mutharika’s arguments might have merits, the intentions to introduce this system are malicious and made in bad faith to discriminate the north.

“The pieces of evidence are many including here the secretive nature and total lack of transparency in the comportment in which this policy issue was made available to the public, coupled with the president’s hateful and conflict-ridden remarks over the same – where the worst fears of the residents of northern Malawi as to the skimmer of this scandalous policy (Bingu Mutharika) were confirmed.

“FOND is concerned that this policy has brought disunity and will continuing to bring disunity among the peace loving Malawians as long as the government does not heed the concerns of those that feel disaffected.”

  1. WAWAMBA says:

Yohannie Mlombe you have refined the speech on Quota not to offend anyone its good for you BUT this lacks decisive advice to people promoting trabalism in Malawi.

During Kamuzu era Tumbukas were hated but not openly mainly because of the issues relating to Cabinet Crisis and fighters of our freedom. You will agree that The Northerners fought had for the freedom. From South we hear of Masauko Chipembere and very few but majority were northerners.

lets dwell at the issue at hand. Muluzi was once offended by northerners BUT never hated Tumbukas openly the way Bingu is doing.

What surprises me is Kamuzu & Bingu was/ are educated people who i believe would easily appreciate our historical back ground. BUT serious lack of Umunthu is the problem.

Bingu by taming Ntaba is going to cost him his good reputation. All these unpopular decisions will back fire shortly. Our set up is God made and to turn it against HIS mighty wish is absurd.

Muluzi was much better in his un educated readership than this tiger in Sheep’s skin.

  2. Yohanne Mlombe-You are writing like you never went to the Academy. No wonder you are doing what you are doing because you were blatantly thick.

  3. Big black says:

ooooo dear god give us some prosperity as a nation. all this nosense about kota sistimu is because the cake is 2 small for all of us. Lord give us a leader who will make us rich.

  4. CHILUNGAMO says:

    UNITE AND STAND PLEASE

  5. GIBO says:

koma dziko likupita kuti ili? tamuoneni Bingu mmene walezelera pachithunzicho.

  6. Bond Namiaka says:

Wawamba, and others of you ilk, will you ever stop fabricating falsehoods on these pages regarding this country’s liberation?
You assert that in the South it was only Masauko Chipembere who defied Kauzu. What arrant nonsense. Ever heard of Augustine Bwanausi and his elder brother Dr Bwanausi and their sister Diana? Ever heard of Willie Chokani, Lawson Chaponda, Medson Silombera of the Mangochi revolution,John Chikwakwa,to name a few? Do not think that all your readers are dumb.

  7. Bond Namiaka says:

Yohannie Mlomba, I agree with Yobu 10:10 that yours an objective nonbiased masterpiece. Only point of correction…It is not correct to say that “at inception 50% of the staff at UNIMA were from the North..” Inception is 1965 and at Chancellor College Malawian academic staff were Dr Chimphamba(Ntcheu)Dr.Z Kadazamira (Dedza) Dr Chilibvumbo (Nkhota kota) and Dr Nelson Mwanza (Mzimba)As you can see Mwanza was a minority. The situation was not too different at Poly Soche Hill Mpemba and Bunda. The numbers of the Northerners only began to increase in the late sixties because they were now returning from Universities from abroad where Kanyama Chiume had sent them nepotistically in large numbers when he was Minister of Education in 1963.Kamuzu kicked him out as Minister of Education a year later but the damage was already done.

  8. Gireya says:

Malawians should stop talking about regionalism, tribalism and so forth. If there were wrongs in the past, lets correct them now for the sake of our country, our children and every peace loving being in this country. Dissent grows wrath. wrath grows violence and we cannot afford to be at each other’s throats in these hard times. Leaders make mistakes too and it is up to us to remain united and focused and advise them. Government is there because of us. United we stand Divided we fall. That was not a fool who said that adage.
