Malawi Police nabs man for harbouring refugees
Malawi Police have charged Martin Phulusa Gama of Dedza with an offence of aiding and abetting unlawful entry, district for harbouring refugees from Dzaleka Refugee Camp in central region district of Dowa.
Police Public Relations Officer for Dedza, Franklin Gausi said Gama, 26, is on remand at Dedza police camp. He said he will appear in court soon to answer the charges.
“The accused admitted the charge during police interrogation,” said Gausi. “He said it was his business.”
The refugees, which he was harbouring, are Somalis, Ethiopians, Bangladeshis, Kenyans and Eritreans who were trying to find their way out of the country through Dedza boma following inhumane conditions in the country.
Dedza police publicist said the law enforcers nabbed Gama after getting a tip off from the public that Gama was harbouring refugees at Kapalamula Village near the border post in Traditional Authority Kachere in Dedza.
Gausi said Gama offence is against Immigration Act. The accused comes from Chipalukwa Village, Traditional Authority Kasumbu .
Last month Police and Immigration Officers intercepted 57 male Somalis and 33 Ethiopians near Dedza as they tried to exit the borders to Mozambique. The refugees moved from Dzaleka refugee camp allegedly due to lack of food and other basic human needs.
