Malawi ranked 132nd out of 183 countries in economic survey

NEPAD_pixs_001-292x211The World Bank’s Doing Business (DB) 2010 Report has position Malawi as number 132 out of the 183 ranked economies in the world.

The report measures a set of regulations affecting ten stages of a business’s life, namely starting a business, dealing with construction permits, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes , trading across borders, enforcing contracts and closing a business.

Malawi has slightly dropped in rank from 131 in DB 2009 period to 132 in DB 2010 because of the pace of reforms rather than the number of reforms.

World Bank Country Manager for Malawi Timothy Gilbo said in Lilongwe Thursday that Malawi had made important reforms but other countries had reformed faster and were more aggressive at the process.

“In order to make substantive gains, more needs to be done and the bank is ready to help,” he said.

He observed that the efforts of the Malawi Government and its partners in carrying out reforms were beginning to show but these needed to be strengthened and accelerated in the wake of the global financial crisis and economic slowdown which have made the economic environment more competitive.–APA

I don’t understand if this is rising or dropping. They might be using a temperature meter. The lower the number the colder it becomes good weather, and the higher the number the hotter it becomes bad weather. I don’t know which direction the economy is approaching. As a game being played with the World Bank and the IMF. And I don’t know whether this year is better than the previous one.Now U$1=MK160 and the last 5years was =MK140.

THERE IS MUCH INDEED TO BE DONE in the sublect of economy and Malawi, i dont loose much hope since we have mose doing His economy business. Im only worried that the more his team mates sing abou his economy the more we see our economy bowing as compared to other economies, Please MAPUYA MULUPALI tell us why back stepping. THE ISSUE IS NOT what reforms but effectiveness and effeciency in implementing. OSAMANGONAMIZA ANTHU KUTENGERA MWA KUTI ABIRI MWA IFE ZA IKONOME IZI ZIKUBWERA MOCHEDWA NKUMATIKAZINGA.. or else do you have any objection to what GILBO and collegues are saying.

UNDULE NKANI YA IKONOMY IMAKHUZANANSO NDI ZANUZI KAPENA it is not a human rights issue..!!

I think they are absolutely right. We need to carry out our economic reforms quickly.

  4. Wakumuzi says:

Koma umbuli ndimatendadi. I have seen a few guys applauding Bingu for “the job well done” as dipicted by the above report.

It reminds me of a friend I had in secondary school. He used to get the last position in class (number 40 – chitseka khomo)and his iliterate father used to slaughter goats for him each time he gets his school report. He never understood that position 40 was the worst a student could get.

Well this man was a farmer and can be forgiven but surely not someone who can access internet, join Nyasanet and communicate in English. Are we so blue that we cant descern failure from sucess? The stats show that we are 132 out of 183, well below countries like Mozambique,Somalia, Bangladesh that have been at war for ages. Or keeping side other countries, we are worse off than the time Muluzi and Kamuzu were in power.

Surely, this is not a good reflection on the Economic Engineer. If he cant manage the economy, then what shall he do? This is not politics friends as facts are there for all to see. If you want proof, just go to Lands or MHC and find out what it takes for one to get a plot. Check with City what it takes to have your drawings approved. Check with ESCOM and Waterboard what it takes to have water/power on your plot. Check with immigration what it takes to get a passport (no wonder people go there and lie that they are from the presidents home). Talk about registering a business? Talk about corruption at Capitol Hill? Nothing gets done without a bribe and if Bingu was genuine with his zero tolerance on corruption, he should have addressed these issues. Unfortunately, ali pa mkhate khoswe. No wonder the Kaliatis can boast that they indeed manipulated secondary school selection and have the guts to say that they are not the only ones doing that. If this was said by Muluzi or Mvula, dont you think the entire UDF executive would have been in remand by now?????

A malawi tiyeni tidzuke. Dzikoli ndi lathu and lets make it a better place for our kids.

    wakumudzi

If we can have many people like you Malawi would developed.

You have really touched majoer areas which are essentials in life and a country which is geared to economic growth.

Just to add salt on what you said about MHC, Land or city Assembly the service are far much below standard. Talking about Escom, I wonder if this country has really got an economic engineer in the driver seat.
Despite the frequent black outs, i went to Mzuzu Escom to have my house connected , but what I was told there but the one of the top most senoir boss is to wait for 2010 or 2011 bwcause now they are not yet through with connections of 2007.

The same office others get connected within a week. I had guests from abroad one time and they were thinking of investing in Malawi but they got discouraged.

Currently the so called national cake is for the lohmwes and i know if i was lohmwe the ESCOM boss would connected power at my house.

Very few will agree with you that we are heading for the worse than what we saw in Kamuzu or Muluzi rule economically.

Keep on educationg us, you’ve my pat on your back.

Amalawi umbuli, thus why we even support the quota system.
