The Nigerian government has made a donation of US$100,000 to the Malawian Aid Fund to cushion the effects of the earthquake that hit the northern part of Malawi in December 2009.

About 127 people were reported dead, 300 wounded and more than 3,000 persons displaced as a result of the earthquake.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ojo Maduekwe, announced the donation in Lilongwe on Tuesday when he met the Malawian President, Dr Bingu wa Mutharika.

A statement signed on Wednesday in Abuja by the spokesman for the ministry, Mr Ozo Nwobu, said that Maduekwe also briefed Mutharika in his capacity as the AU Chairman, on Nigeria’s position on the situation in Niger Republic.

The statement said that some of the issues discussed included the possibility of opening diplomatic missions in Nigeria and Malawi in the not too distant future.

The others were the establishment of a joint bilateral commission to provide the enabling legal framework for cooperation and collaboration on key sectors as well as the possibility of deploying Nigerian Technical Assistance Corps (TAC) volunteers to Malawi.

“Also of special importance was the need to protect the rights of Nigerians living in Malawi and provide them access for the pursuit of their legitimate businesses and means of livelihood,’’ it stated.

The statement added that Mutharika had earlier commended the Nigerian government and Nigerians for their determination to seek constitutional solutions to the political crisis in the country arsing from the ill health of President Umaru Yar’adua.

The Malawian president recalled with deep sense of satisfaction the support Nigeria had offered Malawi in the past, especially in the administrative and judicial sectors.

Mutharika urged that the momentum created by the visit of the Nigerian Foreign Minister should be capitalized to deepen and strengthen ties between the two countries.

Neighboring Republic of Zambia also gave Malawi a cash donation of US$20,000 for quake victims. The donation was presented to President Mutharika by Zambian High Commissioner to Malawi (pictured) at the New State House last month.

The donation included some relief items like blankets.

When a brother is need a good brother helps out. some of the people passing these comments have no idea how hard working the average Nigerian is and how hospitable too. We are a proud people who are ready to admit that bad elements exist in our country not the generality of its polity by far. Dont get so low as to insult the integrity of the most generous of the African people. No Nigerian will ever have the time to put down another african.
