Malawi has joined the international relief efforts towards the Carribean country of Haiti by sending 150 tonnes of rice.

In a statement issued in Lilongwe Saturday, President Bingu wa Mutharika said Malawi identifies with the suffering of the people of Haiti because the southern African country was also hit by a series of earthquakes.

A series of earthquakes, the biggest recording the magnitude of 6.2 on the Ritchter Scale, shook the northern border districts of Karonga and Chitipa and the central district of salima, killing at least four people in Karonga, injuring scores more and felling over 2, 000 houses.

Over 4, 000 people are still displaced in Karonga.

Mutharika said: “Malawi therefore understands the suffering the people of Haiti are induring.”

A powerful earthquake hit Haiti on January 12 killing an estimated200, 000 people and displacing millions .-AP

a spirit of giving!!! its not about how much you have. thats why MALAWIANS from the south and centre moved faster to mobilise resources from within the country to assist the KARONGA victims when another NGO DIRECTOR from KARONGA was busy asking for aid from foreigners…..

Indeed it’s a welcome gesture done by the president. But……do we have enough in our reserves?Tionepo bwino pamenepa.

    • Mana says:

Layman C. you do not need to have too much for you to give. Giving is a nature that we have lacked as a nation and now is the time to start regardless of how much we have.Have you ever thought why countries like USA, UK are blessed with a lot? It is because they give.No matter how poor you may be, I assure you, you
have something to GIVE!!!!with what Haiti has faced, Malawi has too much to give

      • Tawina says:

You can not compare Malawi with countries like US or UK. People may be poor in these countries but they are not desperate. They can afford a life like middle classes of poor countries like Malawi. A person on benefit in UK is better off than civil servants of Malawi.

It is a good gesture to reach out to those in need however, if other people in Malawi are going to bed without any food then there is a big problem with our president.

Why did he do the same to people who were affected with the earth quake in Malawi.

      • George Szvatsek says:

Dear Mana your comment to Layman C. has really made my day. It has been a great privilage for me to live in the U.S and by the standards of my country im considered poor. But you have caused me to see more clearly. The people of Malawi are truly blessed.

I think we need more of this sharing among the poor nations. Foreign aid from the rich countries is more beneficial to the rich countries than the recipients, probably because of strings attached. That is why the more aid you get the poorer you get. In fact I would propose forming a league of poor nations to share resources, experience and ideas, etc.

God bless Malawi. You really are the warm heart of Africa.

even the bible recorded Give and expect not to receive back. also to those who cannot give back to you(needy) and also Jesus say Give and it shall be given back to you, good measure, pressed and overflow. I’m not surprised when the bible people are perishing because of lack of knowledge. As I said come out of darkness(satan) and see the light(Jesus).umbombo uzakuchokani. Thanks Dr Bingu. keep it up God loves givers
