Malawian charity in UK to distribute school and sports equipment in Mangochi
Malawi Youth Dream charity will on the 28 November 2009 distributing sports and school equipment in Mangochi district during a Mangochi School Netball Tournament.
According to director of the charity, Lewis Saidi Kamundi, the tournament will take place at Mangochi community ground and items to be distributed include books, pens, pencils, balls, uniforms, training kits, school bags, rubbers and rulers.
“This is to encourage kids off the street and back to school,” said Kamundi.
The Malawi Youth Dream was set up in UK by Malawian Internationals; it was set in parallel with Mangochi Youth Sports Academy a charity registered with Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi (CONGOMA).
Its purpose is to support the academy and help raise the funds needed for the institution to succeed. Through the Academy, Malawi Youth Dream aims to help advance opportunities for young people initially in Mangochi extending to other districts of Malawi.
“We believe, passionately that sport and play benefit the physical, emotional and social development of children and using Sports as a forum for educating young people about HIV Aids related issues”.
Kamundi also pointed out that the organization aims at creating quality sports development and educational programmes that allows kids to and achieve their full potential and achieve their dreams in sport and life.
They also encourage social development through the provision of well-managed team games and sports that teach leadership skills, fair play, team work and respect for others.
“Over the past year, we have worked in partnership with Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA), The Football Association of Malawi, the District Education Manager as well as the District Commissioner to arrange the launch of both The Academy and Primary Schools Sports Tournament and regular sports training sessions for local children,” he explained.
The Academy has also 2 boys who have been selected to play for Malawi under 17.
Local schools benefits the use of more than 25 sets of boys uniforms and 21 sets of Girls Uniforms donated by UK Local Junior Football Clubs as well as big teams like Liverpool FC who have donated two sets of new uniforms being used by The Academy.
The Academy has arranged for six members from the community who have been trained FA Level 1 coaching course through the funding by FA UK, FA Malawi.
The coaches hold regular trainings to 30 Boys and 22 Girls from the Academy as well as helping training School kids within their schools.
Kamundi said some kits and 60 netballs have since been donated and shipped to Malawi by Gilbert Football Factory and the support from Netball Association of Malawi, England Netball and UK Sport.
