Good idea but find it funny that you start by looking for people instead of setting the profile and expectations. If they are really serious why can't they advertise those jobs or work that needs to be done through our popular channels on internet. You do not look for people first, you first have to identify what needs to be done and set the criterio. So I have a problem with this approach of database. Maybe the way to go is to encourage the setting up of recruitment agencies who can do the work better instead of government playing this role. However, advertise the jobs first.

A Malawi, in my view this is a positive initiative by the Government of Malawi to take stock of the wealth of expertise out there. I do not see anything wrong at all. Indeed I will be sending my own cv and personal details tomorrow.

To be honest if the Government wants to track down its critics, they can do it very easily. Even barefoot computer wizards know how to do that.

Let us be clear: nobody is being forced to submit their details. You are free to send your details or not. And it is not automatic that you will get a job offer just because you have submitted your cv and personal details.

The problem I have is the notion that by using Malawian experts the Government wants to make some savings. If expatriates are paid well, Malawian experts should be paid equally well.

A word to those critics who are afraid to be tracked down. If you believe in what you say in criticizing the Government be man about it. You must be patriotic and brave enough to continue to criticize constructively in order to make Malawi a better place - even if you are tracked down or imprisoned.

Why are you afraid. Kamulepo Kalua continues to bravely criticise the Government from within Malawi. You should also feel free to offer advice and positive criticism.

Brave Malawians like Chakufwa Chihana, Kamuzu Banda, the Catholic Bishops and many others stood up even in the face of threats and risks to their lives. These brave sons of Malawi never hid behind psudo-names at all. They were ready to die. Why not you? Kukonda nsima basi!

Firstly thanks to Nyasa Times for the noble role you are playing in disseminating information to the Malawian community and wider world as such. I know not many years ago it was hard to find a website breaking news for Malawi let alone one that was updating its stories regularly. Now my comment is about creation of data base of Malawians in diaspora. I would like to agree with Watipaso Mkandawire that creation of database for Malawian living abroad is not bad at all. Times have changed and we need to tap any Malawian expertise from wherever they may be in order to help Malawi move to another level. Some of us like many others in diaspora initially worked in Malawi in various capacities such that our know how is now multi facetted which in turn can only work well for the ultimate benefit of Malawi. Can I only ask Nyasa Times to prob this database issue a little bit more so the clear facts and true direction are laid bare for us to make informed decision. Thanks Nyasa Times.

I think this is a good development especially when our country is undergoing major economic, social and polical advancement.I, as a Malawian, would be more than eager to sign up for this gvt initiative. However, there're certain issues that need to be addressed by the current gvt in order to assure people of the credibility of this initiative & how personal info. will not be abused in one way or the other. Another area of concern is that unless the gvt makes radical changes in improving pay packages and working conditions which are in line with the current living standards, and that are not polically motivated pple in Diaspora won't be willing to reptriate & contribute to the national development for which everyone is craving. In a country faced with high unemploment rate, coupled with low gvt spending, how do you assure qualified pple in Diaspora of getting a white colar job?We need more than just keeping our details on your databases!

I think there is always a channel to attract Malawians from the diaspora. An easiest way would be to advertise the available vacancies and let them apply rather than just a blanket registration which raises more suspicion than anything else. After all, anything is possible in politics, let alone with the current President's mood swings!

Nosennse idea and a no brainer! No guarantee that data captured will be used for its intended purpose. This also reminds of the no-existence of clear-cut legal requirement for safegurading personal information in Malawi.

Why can't the government just post vacancies on departments websites and let people subimit their cvs? If you visit government website, there isn't such a link and how do you expect them to keep personal information securely when the government cannot even manage a website?

I attended the meeting last year in Edinburgh City Chambers where the idea was first hatched. Having stayed in the UK for some time, I have problems to buy this idea. Most of the guys who are abroad, are doing donkey work out there. We PHD holders who are working as primary school teachers, security guards, customer assistants, computer technician etc. very few guys are doing professional jobs out there. these people are likely to cheat in the CVs. qualifications do expire especially when you stay idle for years. and here we want these people to be given consultancies back home. shame on government. why dont you improve conditions of service for those patriots at home instead of looking aboroad for people with good papers but little or no experience.
