P1011284Malawi citizens living in the United Kingdom on Saturday held a function to commemorate 45th independence in Northampton.

The function which was graced by High Commissioner to UK, Dr Francis Moto and his wife, Mayor of Northampton and Member of Parliament attracted Malawians from different parts of UK who had traditional performance.

In his speech at the celebrations, the High Commissioner paid tribute to President Bingu wa Mutharika for “providing a clear vision for Malawi”.

Moto said the  independence celebrations give  citizens an opportunity to reflect what has been achieved.

He said Malawi now is in “third republic” since attaining independence.

“The first republic was from 1964 to 1994, the second republic was from 1994 to 2004 and now we are in the third republic which is doing Malawians proud,” said Moto.

“Since 1964 Malawi has undergone various economic, social and political transformation,” said Moto.

“The third republic did set its agenda very clearly,” he said adding “the agenda was to fight poverty and drive Malawi to economic growth and prosperity.”

Moto pointed out that Mutharika government identified six priorities within priorities.

“Agriculture and food security, integrated rural development, transport and infrastructural development, Irrigation and water development, energy and power development and HIV and Aids.

“The results were remarkable. Bumper harvests were realized in the agriculture sector, road infrastructure improvement, the economy improved and the confidence and trust of all stakeholders including the private sector and international donors.”

He said this year’s celebrations were special because the country held a peaceful elections in which Mutharika was overwhelming re-elected.

The envoy praised the current administration for being visionary and development conscious urging investors to come to Malawi for investments.

    Nyasa this is one sided,

We had a Independence Celebration here in Cape Town on the 4th, The High Commissioner and Consulate General were among other quests. Several attempts to communicate with you to give the story have resulted into a black hole.

I have provided my email address and i would appreciate if you could follow up the story.

Come On Nyasa show some balance, all Independence celebrations had a common message and it really surprises me that others are getting coverage and others are not.

Elvis, I don’t think the communication email is manned, because I have suggested several stories and they have never made it onto the website. Also I have never received any communication from the nyasa people to acknowledge receiving the email to begin with.
