Malawian living in Washington, US on Boxing Day braved the cold icy weather to come together for a good cause at the official residence of Malawi’s Ambassador to the United States, Hawa Ndilowe to raise money for the Karonga earthquake victims.

Several items were auctioned at the event including a bottle of Malawi Gin, a hamper with Nali hot-sauce, Mzuzu coffee, Chombe tea and other Malawi products.

“We were able to raise at least $2,800.00 which will all be used to meet the needs of fellow Malawians at home,” said president of the Malawi Washington Association (MWA), Eddie Naming’007Eddie_Naming'ona010018ona.

“Despite the short notice to the community, we had a great turn out on a day many people would have stayed home because of the weather. The ladies brought us delicious home cooked meals and in a span of four hours, MWA, the Malawi Embassy and the community worked as a team to make this possible, “he said.

He thanked the Ambassador for hosting the event.

“Many people have asked us to duplicate the effort and we hope to find ways to do this again. We had fellow Africans from Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia present and it was a reminder for many of us to never underestimate the spirit of giving. No matter how far we are from home, the Warm Heart still remains in all of us.”

In her remarks at the fundraiser, Ambassador Ndilowe thanked the Malawi community and friends of Malawi in US for coming together at for “a very worthwhile cause”.

Ndilowe commended the Malawi Washington Association, Embassy staff and volunteers that took time to prepare food, play the music and organize the well attended event.

A prayer was offered at the event by Pastor Linje Nankhuni to the Karonga Earthquake victims.

President Bingu wa Mutharika declared Karonga district a national disaster after the earthquakes which started on December 6 has claimed lives of four people and displaced thousands.

Government of Malawi has also appealed for assistance to support over 200,000 people living in the area.
