Chifundo: Now part of Madonna family
Malawi’s four-year-old Chifundo ‘Mercy’ James has joined the family of US pop star Madonna after she has been taken out of Malawi.
Chifundo whose adoption by Madonna was granted by Malawi’s Supreme Court of Appeal week when an earlier ruling barring the move was overturned was on Friday moved from Kumbali Lodge, where the 50-year-old singer stays during her trips to Malawi to board a private jet and join Madonna.
Kumbali Lodge staffers said a nanny and a nurse who arrived earlier in the week from US left with the new daughter of the US pop queen under tight security after US Embassy in Lilongwe issued her a Visa on Wednesday allowing her to travel to US.
“She has been taken away from the Lodge. She has learnt to speak basic English. Chifundo can answer a greeting in English and can tell you what she has eaten. She had English speaking lessons,” said the Lodge’s staffer.
“She is now looking cute and clean,” added the Lodge staffer.
Officials at Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe said a private jet was cleared to pick Chifundo and passengers including a nanny and a nurse.
One said a nanny was heard speaking fluent Chichewa, a Malawian national language.
Chifundo now joins her Malawian-born brother David Banda, Lourdes and Rocco.
Madonna and David were spotted at London’s Heathrow Airport on Friday June 19, 2009, from New York reportedly to be on her way to Malawi, to collect Chifundo.
Madonna has founded a charity, Raising Malawi, which helps feed, educate and provide medical care for some of Malawi’s more than 1 million orphans, half of whom have lost a parent to AIDS
