MkandawireMalawi Police have not formally charged a former ruling DPP Deputy Director of Political Affairs, Harry Mkandawire   who was arrested on Friday.

The security forces however continue to detain Mkandawire in Mzuzu Police after a thorough questioning on Friday.

Mzuzu police spokesman Andrew Longwe   said Mkandawire will remains in police custody as “investigations continue”.

However, Mkandawire has been told that he is being investigated for a rally he organised on November 14 with Yeremiah Chihana and Loveness Gondwe where he critised President Bingu wa Mutharika.

He is likely to be charged with proposing violence and using insulting language.

The arrested has been viewed by many as “politically motivated” after Mkandawire recently wrote President Mutharika about the shortcomings of his government policies.

“It seems President Mutharika is employing one of its dirty tactics in trying to gag the critics of his failing government,” observed Suzgo Kumwenda in Mzuzu.

President Mutharika is said to have issued the arrest orders through Inspector General, Peter Mukhitho.

In the letter, Mkandawire criticised President Mutharika for his role in Mulhako wa Alhomwe and the controversial university entrance quota issue.

Mkandawire is also said to have rebuffed President Mutharika advances to withdraw his elections case where Mzuzu High Court ordered vote recount in Billy Kaunda constituency.

The case come for ruling on December 1 and government does not want the opening of a  Pandora box of massive rigging which Mutharika benefited to secure a majority in parliament and renew his term during May 19 polls.
