Mugabe hails Malawians at 45th independence anniversary
President Robert Mugabe has congratulated the government and people of Malawi on their 45th independence anniversary.
Speaking at a dinner on the eve of the independence celebrations at Sanjika Palace, President Mugabe said Zimbabweans and Malawians are brothers and sisters united by culture and history and should not allow themselves to be separated.
He said to him the independence anniversary celebrations are a re-enactment of the 6th of July 1964 when he and a team of Zanu leaders were present as Malawi celebrated its liberation from British colonial rule.
President Mugabe also explained how the people of Malawi contributed to Zimbabwe’s liberation war when the decision was taken in their country to send the first freedom fighters for training in Eastern Europe.
He praised the people of Malawi for the unity they displayed in the last elections and paid tribute to Dr Bingu wa Mutharika for being people-oriented through his policy of supporting agriculture among peasant farmers.
Mugabe also thanked Malawi for the help it has given to Zimbabwe in difficult times.
Mugabe is in Blantyre, at the invitation of the Malawian government and joins other invited leaders and guests for the celebrations to mark Malawi’s 45th independence anniversary.
Malawi attained its independence from Britain on the 6th of July 1964, under the leadership of Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
In 1994 Malawi held its first multi party elections which saw Bakili Muluzi assuming power from Dr Banda.
Bingu wa Mutharika is Malawi’s 3rd president and was recently re-elected to serve a second term.
Zimbabawe and Malawi share close and brotherly ties.
One of the roads in Malawi has been named after President Mugabe one of Africa’s greatest pan-Africanists.-ZBC
