Malawi former president Bakili Muluzi on Tuesday was taken ill to Queens Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre for an emergency medical attention after developing a problem with his spine.

Medical sources at Queens’s hospital in Blantyre told Nyasa Times that Muluzi was checked-in for “slip in lumber disc”.

His son, Atupele Muluzi confirmed about the health scare and said his father was in “critical” but “stable” condition.

“Yes Dr Muluzi was taken to hospital this morning. He was seen by Malawian doctors and they have recommended that he should be seen by an expert as a matter of urgency,” said the young Muluzi who is a Member of Parliament.

“Meanwhile, he has been released from the hospital and is on bed rest at home waiting for arrangements to be made that he flies to South Africa,” he said.

Muluzi, who ruled from 1994 to 2004, returned to Malawi from United Kingdom where he received medical treatment.

Medical sources at Queens’s hospital said the former president “risked” his life  when he travelled a long distance before he had cured properly.

They questioned him why he travelled against a UK medical expert opinion.

But Atupele said the former president was required to come home by the court where he is answering corruption case.

“As of now, he cannot fly to the UK because it is very far. He will have to seek a medical attention in South Africa as a matter of urgency,” said he son.

Muluzi, 66 announced his retirement from politics last week and resigned as national chairman of UDF party.
