Tultumous welcome for Muluzi at his Kapoloma home
Former president Bakili Muluzi who arrived in Malawi last week from the UK where he went for medical attention on Saturday received a tultumous welcome from hundreds of thousands villagers at his Kapoloma village in Machinga.
Muluzi travelled from his BCA residence in Blantyre to Machinga, his first outing since his return to Malawi.
According to his son Atupule Muluzi, Member of Parliament for Machinga North East, the former president travelled to Machinga to visit his aging mother.
“He has gone to visit his mother and see the people,” said the young Muluzi.
However, despite the private status of the trip, crowds descended upon the road to Muluzi’s home to see the former president who is on his way to retirement from his UDF head role. The former president is the Chairman of the United Democratic Front, UDF party.
While he was in the UK, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) propaganda machine circulated numerous rumours that Muluzi had died in the UK.
Through its mouthpieces TVM, MBC, the Digest blog and others, the ruling DPP has also been disparaging the former Malawi leader, insulting him and mocking his ill-health. The insults have continued even after his arrival back in Malawi.
The ruling party has been wishing Muluzi dead for a long time since the incumbent state president, Bingu wa Mutharika, resigned from the UDF to form his own party, the DPP.
The former president has never hidden his ailment. He has explained time and again that he suffered a slipped disc during the 2004 campaign in which he propelled the incumbent, Bingu wa Mutharika, to power.
The former president attends routine medical check-ups in UK and South Africa as a result.
“I am feeling better now but not well enough to say that am completely healed,” said Muluzi in an interview with Nyasa Times as he prepared to leave London for Malawi last week.
Muluzi still has some difficulties to walk.
Doctors are reported to have advised him to retire.

Muluzi’s retirement is long overdue. This back problem he is battling now would not have worsened in the first place if he had let his party UDF choose a success through democratic means. But because Muluzi wanted to have it his way he hand picked Bingu and did everything to support his blind choice to the extent of injuring his back. As if this was not not enough Muluzi went ahead to make an illegal come back which even having a son who is a lawyer he could have taken a family legal advice but instead he aggrevated his back problem by campaigning for John Tembo. Now Muluzi has to live with this bad back forever and am afraid this bad back will beckon him to an early mansion six feet under because it nac not be cured medically although it can be monitored and the pain lessened. The other big damage has been the fact that Bakili Muluzi has destroyed any chances of his son ever becoming president. Atupele will end as a parliamentarian and no more eventually he will leave parliament to purseu his own business or go abroad . All of this is due to (his dad’s) Bakili’s greed and arrogance.
