Mutharika launches tree planting season, announces new energy sources
President Bingu wa Mutharika on Tuesday officially launched this year’s tree planting season in Chiradzulu district.
Speaking at the function, President Mutharika bemoaned that some citizens were carelessly cutting down trees to be used for cooking because they had no easy access to alternative sources of power.
Mutharika disclosed that his government will soon start generating hydro-electric power from various rivers of the country including Thuchira and Ruo.
He said the development will ensure that many people in the rural area have access to power.
Mutharika urged officials from forestry departments throughout the country to provide free trees to people to be planted along river banks with an aim of preventing the effects of climate change.
This year’s tree planting season will run from today, December 15 to next year, April 15.
