Malawi President and currency chairman of African Union, Bingu wa Mutharika has criticised International Criminal Court for its indictments against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

In a speech addressed to African leaders at the opening session of AU summit in the Ugandan capital, Kampala monitored by on Press-TV, President Mutharika said ICC’s arrest warrant is a “violation of the principles of sovereignty”.

Mutharika said there is need to look for ways of resolving the conflict in Sudan without the need to arrest al-Bashir.

“To subject a sovereign head of state to a warrant of arrest is undermining African solidarity and African peace and security that we fought for so many years,” said Mutharika.

The ICC indicted al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur last year.
Earlier this month, the court added genocide to the charges.

Leaders from 53 countries across Africa are meeting in the Ugandan capital for an African Union (AU) summit expected to focus on security in Somalia.

Mutharika also joined Yoweri Museveni, the Ugandan president, who urged African leaders to defeat “the terrorists” and “sweep them out of Africa”.

The Malawi leader condemned the perpetrators of the Kampala blasts “in the strongest terms”.

“The African Union stands with you, my brother President [Museveni] and with the people of Uganda,” Mutharika said.

The bombings, at a rugby club and a restaurant, killed at least 74 people on July 11.
