Mutharika urges opposition to be ‘constructive’ in independence day speech
President Bingu wa Mutharika has called on the minority opposition in parliament to be constructive and help his government in achieving its development agenda.
“The future of this country belongs to us all. We need to unite. There should be no pulling each other’s jackets. We should stop jealousy and envy,” President Mutharika told crowds marking 45 years of independence.
He said the opposition should be constructive saying any destructive tactics will not work against his party’s absolute majority in the national assembly.
Mutharika said despite being in majority in the last five years, the opposition failed to frustrate his government and boasted that his government will never be suffocated by the opposition.
“If you failed when you were in majority, you will never succeed,” said the President.
In his speech, President Mutharika highlighted his government’s focus on Agriculture and Food Security pointing out that the subsidized fertilizer programme will continue to be his government’s priority with the price of the commodity pegged at K500 this growing season.
Malawi grew enough to feed its 13 million people for the first time in seven years in 2006, following a series of poor harvests blamed on drought.
Last year, Malawi produced a bumper harvest of 3.3 million tonnes of maize, also credited to the subsidies.
He also said his government has realised that energy, mining and industrial development are critical to the economic growth and development of the country.
Mutharika said he was proud that since he took over power, the country has been experiencing an economic growth from 7% in 2005 and said the projected growth this year is at 9 %.
“We need to celebrate that our economic policies are good and we will continue to build on the strong economic foundation we have already laid down and maintain sustainable economic growth to develop the country and better the lives of Malawians,” he said.
Mutharika also pledged to continue appointing women in influential positions and cited his choice of Joyce Banda as first female vice president and 11 female ministers in his cabinet.
In front of a cheering crowd of cheering supporters, Mutharika said: “Amai a Bingu woyee! I can assure you that women will continue to be given key positions.”
The President later watched the final event, a football friendly match between Malawi and Swaziland.
