gabThe Malawi chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi) has condemned the arrest of Gabriel Kamlomo, editor for Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) on a charge of presenting false information to a public officer.

“It is a gross violation of human rights for the police to arrest a person when investigations have not been concluded. It is also of great concern for the police to conclude that the issue was not true when they had no talked to the principal subjects of the story,” said the statement from Namisa.

“MISA Malawi expected the police to conduct themselves in a professional manner and collaborate with Mr. Kamlomo to help them with the investigations,” said the statement

However, some journalists have questioned the conservative way which the body handles such issues accusing it on delays to act on matters that interferes the press freedom.

One journalist who asked for anonymity said the body kept on dilly-dallying when Joy Radio was being victimized by the police and it took the whole day to come up with the so called statement on the issue of Kamlomo (pictured second from left).

“With Joy, they said the house should first write a report before they act and now they had to consult NAMISA Chairman Brian Ligomeka who is not based at the head office in Lilongwe,” the journalist said

Ligomeka, based in Blantyre is now the Editor of Daily Times Newspaper the subsidiary of Blantyre Newspapers Limited.
