New head of DFID Malawi office

UK Department for International Development (DFID) in Malawi has a new Head of Office, Sarah Sanyahumbi, who succeeds Gwen Hines and assumes her duties on Monday.
According to a statement from DFID, Sanyahumbi is an experienced Senior Civil Servant with over 17 years working in development, primarily in Asia.
“I am delighted to have this opportunity to work in Malawi to contribute to the fight against poverty and help to improve the lives of poor people in this country,” she said.
Meanwhile, DFID which is Britain’s aid arm is withholding aid to Malawi pending a review of its ties with the southern African country after the mutual expulsion of diplomats in April.
Sanyahumbi was head of the DFID Office in Nepal, running Nepal’s biggest bilateral programme, worth over £331 million from 2011-2015.
She has previously worked in India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, as well as a three year secondment as a National Expert to the European Commission in Brussels.
In addition to strong development expertise, she has been involved in emergency humanitarian response, leading on the UK’s emergency and longer term response to the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia and involved in the UK’s response to the 2007 floods and cyclone in Bangladesh, according to the statement.
