Police in Blantyre have arrested a Zomba-based farmer on allegations that he stashed debris  in his tobacco bales.

This comes as the tobacco sales entered a second day at the Limbe Auction Floors on Thursday.

The farmer, Fraction Pikhiwa, is said to have put the “non-tobacco related materials” in three of his bales so as to enhance their weight.

Last year, several farmers were also arrested on the same accusations.

Pikhiwa is expected to appear in court  to answer charges that were not immediately clear.

Meanwhile, Tobacco continued to fetch good prices at the Limbe Auction Floors on Thursday.

Reports say the lowest grade is fetching US$1.15 per kg while the prices for highest grades are ranging from US$2 to US$2.30.
