The wedding day for President Bingu wa Mutharika and fiancée, former tourism minister, Callister Chapola Chimombo has been changed for the second time in a space of two weeks.

The organizing committee of the wedding announced on Tuesday that the new date for the wedding ceremony is April 17.

Chairman of the wedding organizing committee – State House chief of staff – Edward Sawerengera said the change is due to the Easter calendar as the 25th of April is the fourth Sunday of Easter called “Good Shepherd Sunday”.

Mutharika and Chimombo are Catholics.

“The date has been changed because 25th April 2010 is … a World Day of Prayer for priestly and religious vocations,” reads the statement.

Initially, the wedding was slated for 1st May this year, but few days ago, the committee which is organizing the marriage ceremony announced the change of the wedding ritual from 1st May to 25th April this year.

According to the committee, the President would be busy with other official duties from 25th April to the 29th of April this year.

Government insiders told Nyasa Times that the change has come about because the President will be attending this year’s annual Shanghai Expo in China.

The first couple is also expected to that their honeymoon in China.

The President and the in-coming First Lady got engaged on the 14th of February this year.

Mutharika’s first wife, Ethel, died of cancer in 2007 after more than 30 years of marriage. The 76-year-old president has four children.

Chapola-Chimombo is a widow in her late 40s and has two children from her first marriage.

Changing wedding dates like you are changing underwear. Who is responsible for this mess-up? The boss himself or the committee?
What they should know is that the mess-up is not giving the whole issue the much needed air of respectability. They should borrow a leaf from the Kamuzu days when every State function was being executed with top-notch planning.
This wedding has now become a comedy of errors, a joke.
