Programme for Malawi August 17 vigil

Organisers of Malawi August 17 countrywide vigils aimed at demanding President Bingu wa Mutharika’s immediate redress for their concerns have released an outline of the vigils which they say will be in two segments.
The first phase of the vigils will be for 48 hours (two days) within which the organisers expect President Mutharika to address the concerns they raised in their July 20, 2011 petition.
The other segment of the national vigils will be an indefinite one until Mutharika responds to the petition “in a positively substantive manner.”
In their statement, the organisers remind Malawians that the national vigils will be peaceful and “we would appeal to all Malawians across the country to be disciplined at all times. We therefore urge the Malawi Police Service to protect the citizens and ensure that no live ammunition or any form of force is used.
“Government, in particular, is urged to allow citizens to carry out these peaceful vigils without any constraint, harassment or impediment,” says the statement titled ‘Uniting to resist bad economic and democratic governance- Another Malawi is possible.”
In Blantyre, the vigil will be at the popular Old Town Hall along Victoria Avenue, in Lilongwe, the assembly will be from the Parliament roundabout to Capital Hotel roundabout extending to Civic Centre Offices while in Mzuzu the gathering will be from Old Stage Coach roundabout to Civic offices roundabout.
The organisers have identified district assembly’s offices along Mkulichi road where the vigil will be in the old Malawi’s capital Zomba city.
In all other districts, stakeholders will assemble at the district assemblies’ grounds. The vigils will start at 8.00AM from all the designated points.
Just like was the case on July 20, the organisers are also appealing to all Malawians to put on anything red (trousers, t-shirts, caps, scarves or any red piece of cloth draped upon one’s person) on the day. And all drivers are urged to hoot and, where possible, offer lifts to the venues.
“All participating Malawians and well wishers are requested to come along with or provide food, drinks and water. Employers are urged to release all their workers including domestic servants for this noble cause,” concludes the statement.
