Robbers ransack office of renowned Malawi’s democracy campaigner
Barely a few months after robbers attacked his residence and raped his worker’s daughter, Rafik Hajat, Executive Director of Institute for Policy Interaction (IPI), could not believe his eyes when thugs swept his offices clean .
The robbers looted his offices at Chichiri in Blantyre at approximately 1.00 am on Monday, February 1.
Hajat, a campaigner for rule of law and democracy, said the thieves broke into his offices and stole computers, fans, radios, among others.
“They had departed with the loot by the time the Rapid Response Police Team arrived on the scene after an alarm was raised,” he said.
“The mess they left behind leaves one with a feeling of desolation and impotent fury, and one wonders how long it will take to find an equitable path out of this nightmarish start to 2010,” lamented Hajat.
However, no one was hurt, but the loss of important information is a serious blow to Hajat and the IPI.
“The information may well be irrecoverable and it leads us to speculate at sinister motives behind this incursion since only certain computers/files were targeted whilst other valuable items were left untouched. God only knows what motivates such people, but we will endeavour to struggle on as best as we can,” said Hajat.
If this campaigner had important data on his computers he should have arranged for off site back-up. I’m sure he has and this is just a ruse to get those who came to ransack his office feel secure for time being and therefore he can carry on with his campaigning without the thugs coming again to ransack his property.
Hajat, these are not mere thugs. They are government operatives similar to UDF’s young democrats.
Fit your offices with cameras. You will see what I am talking about. Go to South Africa and get the best security gadgets which would inform you who has broken into your office on the cell phone immediately the incident has happened.
Police will just promise you investigation, but they will not do anything. There is no security in Malawi.
This country is gone. Mutharika will now make sure he clamps down on all his critics because he does not want to discredit his AU chairmaship.
The police is nothing now, but an instrument of silencing people’s views.

Its sad that freedom of expression can be abused like this.
My prayers first go Lombo for his sins and unwelcome remarks. It would if take all things in a positive way. Provide useful advice / tips to those in need. If we have such attitude we will never prosper. Imagine people of Lombo caliber, can they develop their homes let alone our country? May the Almighty have mercy on all people with bent minds.
I urge nyasatimes to start moderating comments by readers, (and filter out all bad ones) I don’t see how they can allow nasty (unpalatable) comments as those by Lombo to be put on the web as they did, otherwise the world will take nyasatimes is mind-corrupted people and anything associated with evil.
