Malawi’s tobacco market officially opened on Monday at Lilongwe’s auction floors with good prices of US$2.10 per kg offered for an average leaf of quality tobacco, APA has learnt here.

According to Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) General Manager Bruce Munthali, the market started well because buyers were using government’s minimum average prices of US$2 per kg for a quality tobacco leaf.

“Government is satisfied with the way the market has started for this season compared to last year where buyers offered very low prices,” he said.

He, however, bemoaned the low production of tobacco this season due to a dry spell which most parts of the country experienced.-APA

So you know that fixing prices helps. To hell with textbook economists who talk about supply and demand when the sellers is at the mercy of the buyers. When you market failures it is justified to intervene. And that is what government did.

GVT must also set a minimum salary for employees in malawi, more especially, domestic workers and all those working for Asians. That can also help diminishing oppression in this country.
