Top marketer to run new mobile firm

Cellcom, a company that has submitted its bid for a fourth Malawi mobile licence, has hired a top marketer and former Chief Commercial Officer, Africa at Zain Group in Amsterdam, Maurice Newa, as its Managing Director.

Newa brings with him 16 years of experience as a marketer for the world’s top brands one of which being Zain with operations in over 16 countries.

With marketing guru on top of the game, Cellcom is determined to bring to end woes that have rocked Malawi’s telecommunications industry.

Newa has just left his lucrative job at Zain headquarters Amsterdam, Netherlands where he was Chief Commercial Officer, Africa.

Previously he was Group Marketing Director for Celtel International BV looking after the company’s global marketing strategies.

Newa joined Celtel from Coca Cola South Africa where he was Franchise Marketing Manager for Kenya and South Africa.

In Malawi he was Sales and Marketing Director for Carlsberg Breweries, Marketing Manager for British American Tobacco and Senior Brand Manager for Unilever.

The youthful marketer holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Liverpool, Bachelor of Social Science (Economics) from the University of Malawi and other numerous qualifications including post graduate diplomas in Marketing and Accounting.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has announced that they will start giving monetary penalties to telecommunication service providers who continue to provide substandard services in the country.

A snapshot survey done by Nyasa Times shows Malawians are in favour of Cellcom as an indigenous local cell phone company that will solve their communication problems.

Other companies bidding for the fourth licences include Smart Telecom Limited, Zambezi Africa Holdings from South Africa and C Mobile Group from Virgin Islands.
