jzu mcpjz tFormer MCP Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Central Boniface Kadzamira has said a pressure group in the party fighting for change of leadership will exist until party president John Tembo quit.

Kadzamira described the existence of the pressure group to fight for leadership change as a sign of “democracy is maturing” in the party.

“This simply shows there is democracy in our party. We are simply a pressure group, a task force. We just want leadership to change in our party,” said Kadzamira.

He however said if Tembo abdicates from the party helm, due process of electing a leader will be followed.

“The mandate to choose a leader rest in the convention,” said Kadzamira who pointed out that only a person elected by party office bearers from all structures will be legitimate leader.

Kadzamira was speaking after the ‘pressure group’ planned march in the capital city, Lilongwe was disturbed with violence when two members of parliament party to its agenda were attacked by supporters believed to be sympathetic to Tembo.

However, MCP secretary-general Chris Daza said the party does not recognise any faction or clique which is not amongst its organ under the constitution.

Daza also condemned the people who gathered at former Head of State, late Ngwazi Kamuzu Banda’s mausoleum for prayers before demanding the resignation of Tembo.

“We  totally oppose to this whole idea,” said Daza.

The ‘pressure group’ is  being led by former spokesman of the party, Ishmael Chafukila.

Chafukila braved to lead the call for Tembo’s resignation when he publicly issued statements in the media.

He was fired from his position as party spokesman.

However,  the MCP restoration movement UK linkman, Chris Banda said the momentum to remove Tembo is growing.

“We repeat our call to Hon Tembo to do the right thing and resign as the leader of MCP, to allow an interim leadership to take over and manage the party towards a party convention,” said Banda.

“We want constructive and objective opposition in and outside parliament that must work with the government of the day to meet the social and economic aspirations of all Malawians regardless of their political persuasion,” he said.

The group argues that it has braved the aggressive and uncompromising character of Tembo to call for his resignation as the leader of the party because they strongly believe that contrary to a common belief that Tembo has built MCP, the party survived because of the work of many dedicated Malawians “who have hung in there” to keep the legacy of Kamuzu Banda going.
