Millenium Village Project communities in the central Malawi district of Mchinji bordering eastern Zambia on Thursday received a grant of communication equipment from Zain Malawi, the country’s main mobile phone service provider.

The equipments include four kiosks for making telephones, seven payphones and several cellullar phones.

Zain Malawi Managing Director, Fayaz King,  said the donation was a commitment to helping the Malawi government attain the Millenium Development Goals (MDG’s) and avail itself out of poverty.

“We are proud to partner government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in ensuring the attainment of these goals,” he said.

He said Zain’s support of Millenium Village Project is a bold, innovative model for helping rural African communities avail themselves out of extreme poverty.

Through fighting poverty at grassroot level, community led development in rural Africa can achieve the MDG’s by 2015 and escape from the poverty trap, he added.

Millenium Village Project Manager James Mtupanyama said the communication equipment will help the communities in accessing markets for their products as awell as during times of emergencies.
